FLR?
« on: July 07, 2005, 11:07:11 AM »
Anyone know how long it takes for a decision on a FLR application that is mailed? We prefer it this way because I will either be very pregnant or just had our daughter by the time we apply and dont want to be traveling a long way.
Also do I have to apply for the FLR before my fiancee visa is expired? or does the fiancee visa expiration just mean that I have to be married by that date?

Yes, you have to apply for FLR before the Fiancee Visa expires.

Don't know how long it takes by post - I've always done my applications in person.

hiya, it took about 3 weeks for my flr to come back
if i remember correctly you send off the application a few weeks before your current visa expires (fiance visa i assume) and yes you'll need to be married as you'll need the marriage certificate in with other documents for your flr
visa
think its basically all the usuall stuff passports (both),birth certificates (both) and other things like bank statements
dont remember exactly what all i sent
good luck

ok thanks for that. we were planning on applying for my flr next month (i just got here last week we are getting married in a couple weeks) its good to find out im not suppose to do it until a few weeks before my fiancee visa expires. is it more expensive to do it in person because its faster? thats a huge price differance.

You can apply for your FLR as soon as you have your marriage certificate -- not a few weeks before your fiancee' visa expires...otherwise, people who got married as soon as they entered on a fiancee' visa would have to wait up to 6 months before they could apply for FLR and thus, obtain permission to work.

I had this same question.  But part two of my question is, do I go to the US Embassy to have my name legally changed once we are married, and should I have this done prior to applying for FLR?  Does anyone know (roughly) how long it will take to get our marriage certificate back?   I will be arriving in early Sept, getting married on Nov 5 (yeah!), and then hope to start the ball rolling on name change/FLR once the marriage certificate is received.

You don't need to have your name changed when applying for your FLR.  You can send your passport to the embassy to have your name changed (I think it's free now...you just pay for the postage) once you have your FLR.  You'll need to call your county registrar of deeds to ask about the marriage certificate turnaround...some people get theirs the next day and some have to wait for a couple of weeks to get it in the post.
