Difference between Work Permit and Student Dependent
« on: July 13, 2005, 09:41:16 PM »
Other than the title or visa name, is there any practical difference in regards to working in the UK between someone who has a work permit, and someone who has permission to work via being a student dependent?

A person a work-permit is restricted to employment by the employer sponsor of his/her permit.  In order the change jobs, his new employer must agree to sponsor a new permit.

A student dependent person, however, has no restrictions on whom he/she can work for.

Adding on to this that the WP holder can apply for ILR off his own bat...

Thanks for the clarification, although I'm not sure what ILR is?

Indefinite Leave to Remain - means you get to remain in the UK indefinitely!

So I got the visas, and my wifes just says "no recourse to public funds", I assume this means there are no other restrictions.

It's strange too, because any recruiter she has spoken to asks if she has a work permit, it seems to me that the British recruiters themselves don't completely understand the visa process/system.

Yep.  So long as she doesn't apply for public funds, she's free to work as she pleases, for whomever she pleases.

A lot of recruiters don't get it.  That's true.

Recruiters shouldn't be asking if she has a WP but maybe they ask her if she NEEDS one?  In which case, she should say no, I have legal right to work in the UK as a dependent of a student visa holder.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

Yo to ep:  Half the Home Office doesn't have a grip on the rules, why single out head-hunters?
