Yes here one must do this as well. I certainly didn't mind at all, it should be a requirement in all countries.

Do be aware that if you have ever lived abroad (meaning outside the UK) criminal records checks can be frustratingly slow.

I was offered a temp job working with the police department, in a civilian capacity, and the offer was rescinded when they realized that I had only been in the UK for 3 months. They said I had not been here long enough to have a background check done on me.
