You can buy brown eggs in most stores stateside now...it's kinder for the chickens. The only difference between the two is that some genius decided that white eggs looked better so they started feeding chickens small pebbles to "clean" the shells.

Kristi, thanks for the info on the baking soda. I love to bake and have some great recipes. It's very helpful to know to double the powder.

Yeah, I've been warned about the vinegar thing! My brother used to live in RI so he warned me before I visited. Gives me shudders! Just hand me my Heinz!

Alicia, I'll remember the idea of taking light bulbs with me when replacing. At this rate, I'll have to allow several hours for marketing the first few times!

Keep the hints and suggestions coming, y'all! I'm keeping a divided notebook and writing down this stuff. Wonder what they'll make of me the first time I do the marketing and pull out my five subject notebook?  :)

When I went back to the USA last October I saw white eggs in mom's fridge and they looked almost freakish to me. So strange how you get used to seeing things a certain way.

I don't take the old bulbs with me what I did was when we first moved in we looked how many rooms had different types of bulbs and bought packets of each kind and just note which kind I need to pick up at the shop before the stocks run out . You can get packets of 4-10 (they are not costly and now the energy saving ones are going down in price)...maybe it's the habbit from working in a pathology lab and me being in charge of laboratory inventory. ;D

Lakeland makes kits that dye brown eggs brilliantly.   :D

Buy a scale if you like to bake a lot.  Many recipes here are measured in metric.  A scale is invaluable for this.

if you are a fan of grape jelly then I suggest you shipping it over as there is no such thing here.

Sainsbury's sells pure maple syrup.  It's in the same aisle as spices and oils in our one.

Baking soda is single action, not double action like in the US so you'll need twice as much in your US recipes.

Ah Ha! Last time I visited I attempted to make tollhouse cookies, and couldn't figure out what went wrong...bet that was it  ???

I've done the very same thing. Took me about three tries before I figured it out!

Baking soda is the same here... it's baking powder that's different!   :)
