I have found damson jam to be a fine substitute for grape jelly.

Baking soda is the same here... it's baking powder that's different!   :)

Not to go off on a baking theme, but I make loads of cakes all the time for people and I always, always use self-raising flour - never plain for any baking these days - and always double the amount of baking powder.  Too much though can give the dough/batter a slightly bitter taste. I am also healthy with baking soda but not double. I just made a massive 2 layer 9x13 lemon cake for my boss yesterday and I had at least 5 women come up and ask me how I get my cakes so light and fluffy and so tall!

Oooh, I adore black currant jam!! Yesterday I went to have tea at a friend's house and she had made her own scones and black currant jam, so we had cream teas with black currant instead of strawberry. It was phenomenal!!

I have a confession to make. I tried marmite. And I liked it.

But I'm so ashamed . . . . hehehe. Seriously, I was dared into it by a coworker and I was SO ready to spit the stuff out but wow! it's good! And just the day before I was bemoaning the fact that my 3 y/o was being given marmite at nursery and he was asking for it at home!

o/~What a difference a day makes . . . . 24 little hours . . . .o/~

My first day here right after we got off the flight from Chicago we stopped at one of those motorway cafes..and David ordered a full english....and had gotten a pack of marmite..and said oh so lovingly here try this and popped a bit of toast, egg and marmite in my mouth...........I almost got on the return plane.....

I don't like black currant either.....

I think that's the key otterpop..it has to be done very thinly ...I have yet to master this on nursing rounds... :P

Absolutely. And the butter-to-marmite ratio is crucial.
