What are you called - or will you be called?
« on: July 23, 2005, 02:42:45 PM »
Are you a Mom in the UK or have you decided to go by Mum? Or, if no kids yet, what do you want to be called when you do have them?

I haven't decided (no kids yet). I'm kinda ok with Mum but detest Mummy which you have to go thru first. I can't get images of mummies (monsters in badages!) out of my head whenever I hear it. Right now I'm leaning towards Mom....
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

My boys called me mummy in UK.  It was only natural, since they were born there and that is what was used by everybody.

Now that I'm here, they've changed over to mommy because it's what is used here.  I never said what to use one way or another, they just picked it up themselves.

I'm not in the UK, but no one in my family has every used mommy or mummy. Growing up we called my mother mom, mum or mother, and my son calls me mom or mother, and his dad is just dad. I don't know why, but adding that -y to the end never felt right. Mum is a luvley word in either place though.

I like the variety of names you can choose from at the grandma stage though with a 17 yr old, I am in NO hurry to go there. My mom is Nana to my son but he also has a grandma, and an 'old grandma Ellen'.

I'm Mummy.  It wasn't a huge decision-it's what they hear from everybody.  It hasn't been shortened to Mum yet-we're both still Mummy and Daddy.   :)  But then James still calls his parents Mummy and Daddy-and his father used Mummy and Daddy for his parents.  One of those family things I guess. :)

Funny you should mention the Grandma bit. DH's mother is Granny to his neice and nephew and will be for any kids we have, too. My mother on the other hand, would sooner die than be called that!!  ::) She's also surprised me and is objecting to just plain Grandma as well!! Turns out since she lived in India as a child, she's partial to some of the Indian words for Grandmother. Right now she's thinking Amma!!! Leave it to my Mom to be different - but she may well change her mind by the time she actually has to make a decision!

My best friend's parents refuse to use word that means grandparent.  They use CT (her initials) and Uncle George!

My mother-in-law uses Granny and my stepmom is Nana.  When I was growing up, both sets of grandparents were grandma and grandpa.

Amma is nice! :)

My mum was only 43 when I had my son and she said she was not ready to be a "grandma" so she chose Nana. It's also easier to know who you're talking about if everyone has their own monikers.

MmmuuuuuummmmmmmmMM  :P

But never fear, gentlemen; castration was really not the point of feminism, and we women are too busy eviscerating one another to take you on.

Maaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!! I don't like mum, and mom is ok, but maaaa I could do. Just as long as he's not hollering it at the top of his voice.

I don't have any kids yet but when I do I'd like to be called Muma.  We used to call our mother that when we were growing up, it was kind of a family thing, then I later found out it's an UP(Upper Penisula, Michigan)/Canadian thing.  My family is originally from the UP.
All of my nieces and nephews call their mothers Mama so it fits nicely between the two country's..  a little bit of both  :D   Though I'm sure it will sound odd and in the end I'll end up being Mum.. ugh

I'm mummy.  Her twee voice is so lovely to hear!  It took her ages to say 'Mummy' - she said 'Daddy' first and then called me Daddy as well, so I was pleased to hear it.

My daughter called me Mommy when she was little and still does (she's 24). She calls me Paula when she's ticked off at me. She calls her father Daddy and probably always will (it's a Southern thing, I guess). But, when she was 15 and made her first trip to the UK she came back calling me Mummy until her friends teased her out of it.

Mentioned one day that when I become a grandmother I'd like to be called Nana because all of the other names have been taken. (Large family, lots of living grands and greats.) My teenage niece overheard this and now teases me ,"Ohhhhh, pooooor Nana", reminding me that Nana was the Darlings dog in Peter Pan.

As long as what I'm called can be repeated in polite company, I'm okay with whatever.
