Yup, I've been there!

It's a monastery built in respect and reverance to St. Michael the Archangel. An amazing place.

If you can go there? Go. Don't think twice about it.

I have pics.

Been to St Michael's Mount, and it is breathtaking. I think the guy who built it was the abbot from Mount St. Michel. The St Aubyn family still live in the Castle there, but The National Trust oversee the property.  It does have a mystical aura about it.  Definately worth a drive down to Cornwall to see it. I havn't visited Mount St Michel, but plan do one day :)

Edit: found a good link with some history between the two places,,,

I get all those weird Islandy places mixed up.  I've been to Lindisfarne and St. Michael's Mount and seen Mont St. Michel.  All really cool. :)

Oh, I wasn't aware of St Michael's Mount. Thanks for the url and history.

*nod* and yes, Le Mont Saint Michel felt very mystical also. I was just asking Daver in email if he had ever been to The Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick, Canada. They have 50' tides there....

There are no words that can explain it.

Yes, you can sometimes mix them up.

I was at one time hopping so many islands and beaches that my mind was cracking in the beauty. I was born and raised on an island, so this may be expected.

I would gauge wave heights to beach mass ratio. lol

Has anyone seen the mini series movie "Merlin", I think they used either Mont St Michel, or St Michael's Mount to represent Avalon. Was a great shot of Merlin riding a horse along the causeway up to the 'Mount'.

I went to Brittany last year and could see it from Dinan.  Now, Dinan (swoooooon) was absolutely heavenly...... one of the loveliest medieval towns I have ever seen, we took amazing photo's, beautiful prints of the town (3 large unframed for 10 Euro!), met lovely people and had a fabulous time.

If I could earn a living over there, we'd go live there in a heartbeat.  If you get the chance to go and it's so reasonable to travel to that part of France now (Ferry to St Malo), do go, I very much regret missing Mt st Michel as we were so close :(

Kewl pic Belinda,,I wonder if the tire tracks might be from the 'land to sea' vehicle that we saw when we were there. A couple of residents were getting on it to go to the island. They seemed to be carrying provisions or something.  The causeway was covered with water, and apparently they use that to get back and forth. We sat there in awe, and wanted to ride on it so bad,,lol.  I really wanted to take the girls thru Cornwall while they are here, but time is getting away from us. Maybe next time :)

Andrew and I went there four years ago. It's beautiful, but be forewarned: There is a LOT of stair-climbing required to get to the monastery. The little town that supports the site is very quaint, as well (one steep, winding street lined with small shops). People live there, which could be both very cool and very isolating. We just went for a day, on a chartered tour from Paris. The French countryside was beautiful (Normandy).  It would have been cool to spend the night.

On the way back, we stopped for an evening meal (or dinner, or supper, or tea) break at the Normandy museum for American soldiers who died there during World War 2. The museum was closed except for the large lobby, where the dining tables were set up, but we managed to pick up some interesting books about that, as well, at the gift desk.

Right. The pic I posted is as close as I've gotten. The thought of all those stairs is pretty daunting!  :-\\\\
