Adjusted to curries?
« on: July 26, 2005, 10:24:17 AM »
I don't know if it's a Midwest thing, or just an American thing, but I can't get used to curry.  The smell, the taste, the sight... and most people I've met feel the same way (I'm from Michigan)!  I've even tried super authentic stuff... straight from India.  My cousin married an Indian girl and they flew cooks over from India... and I couldn't stomach it.  How has everyone adjusted?  Is the curry different in the UK?  Do you guys all like it?  I feel bad because my fiance from Yorkshire LOVES the stuff and I can't stomach it enough even to get take away with him.  Maybe I'll have to get a nose plug or something....  ;D

No offence, but I wouldn't consider not liking the taste or smell of a food a regional thing...it's a very personal thing.

My English boss can't stand the smell of curry.  Florida-born me LOVES it.

Mmmm, nothing in the world like a chicken madras on a chilly evening.  LOVES it!  So happy to have a Balti house right across the street - two of them in fact.

Yeah, I liken to think of curries as to marmite- you either love or hate it!

I'm in the hate it category.....like you, the smell...everything turns my stomach.

Proper Mexican food will be on the agenda my first week back in the US :D

My husband is originally from Russia, I am from New England...though we have both tried Indian food several times, neither of us have developed a liking for it. I am more open about it than he is (although to be fair, he hasn't been very adventurous, so he really dislikes it...but he keeps trying the same thing over and over, so why would he suddenly decide to like it if he didn't in the first place?)

The thing is, I live here fine without ever eating Indian food. There are many different foods here in Newcastle...I have a favorite Thai restaurant that is the best thai food I have ever eaten!

see i used to hate it-hate it.  the smell of it used to make me retch

i met dave and it's his favorite, so as a wedding present i offered to try it.  i went out with a friend, tried tandoori shrimp (good) but then tried a bit of my friend's Chicken tikka masala and OH MY GOD i was hooked

there is still a smell that bothers me, but no more gagging.  MMMMMMMM.  Curry!

I am a Brit too and I cannot stand it, the smell, the taste, the texture, the imagined ingredients.... I was going to fly back to the US on Air India and I am not kidding when I say this was a major reason I spent an extra £100 to fly with an AA!!

I really have no idea how it came to be England's number one favourite food!

I really don't like cardamom seeds that's my reason  ... :P

Oh I agree that it's a very personal thing, but it just seems that I don't come across very many Michiganders that actually love curry.  This is reflected in the fact that curry take aways are basically unheard of unless you seek them out (not like in England).  If there was a demand in the general population, there would be supply for it.  I've been all over the US and generally don't think curries is popular as it is in the UK.  Unless we're talking NYC, then everything is available.

And actually, I think tastes are very regional.  For example, Americans LOVE Mexican type food I would say, because there are many chains for Mexican Food.  Unfortunately I didn't see many in England and there are no Taco Bells ( :\\\'() in the UK that I'm aware of.  (point taken, I realize Taco Bell is very far from authentic Mexican)  McDonalds for example offers different options for different regions in the US and throughout the world.  Like in Greece for example, they have pitas in McDonalds.  Just some thoughts :)  I'm way off topic now...
