Weekly food budget?
« on: July 26, 2005, 05:53:16 PM »
How much do you spend a week feeding your family? What is your family size?

I've decided I should make a food budget and (try to) stick to it...just not quite sure what is ''average'' here even though I have been shopping by myself for the past year.

Thanks!

We average about £100 per week for a family of four (plus diapers, not including fags).  I've recently started shopping online and can often meet or beat that £100, including fags and delivery charge.

I'm finding that I'm spending far less online because I don't 'see' things and say 'Ooo, I want', plus if I can't remember if I need something, I just pop in the kitchen whereas if I were at the store, I'd buy it just to be on the safe side.

On average, I'm saving around £20-30 by shopping online.

I spend about £40 every 10 days for just me.  I do all my shopping online for the most part because I live in the city and don't have a car.  Lugging groceries home on the bus or tube sucks.  I also impulse shop less, like Cait.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

We spend about £70 per week (for 2!!) though that does include some cleaning and bath products as well as a bit of cat stuff. We're also food snobs and impulse shoppers so I'm thinking of switching to online shopping for basics and buying meat/veg at the local market.

We do about £40 to £75 for two per week.  I make a list and stick to it about 90% of the time.  Rich adds crap in about 100% of the time!

We spend £50 per week (2 adults, 1 dog) every week.  Shopping online helps SO much with staying on budget -- I am the ULTIMATE impulse buyer and any in-store shop automatically costs at least £25 more than an online one.   ::)

At the moment we are spending about £70 per week for 2 adults & 1 dog.  This includes cleaning stuff, washing powder, dog food, and beer.

It's just me and the cat - I get paid every two weeks and spend a little over $100 each visit.  But that includes wine, toiletries, laundry supplies, cat snackies/food/litter, etc.

We average £80-100 per week for two adults, two teenagers and an eight year old.  We're pretty careful about sticking to a list and not impulse buying.  That includes everything-food/laundry/toiletries/cleaning stuff and the cats.

I wanna see your list!!! DH and I go over and over ours and even when we stick to a cheap list, we still spend about £60 for 2 if we're really really really careful!

Thanks for everyone's input. I've never considered shopping online and having it delivered because I thought it would be far more expensive.

For those of you that do shop online, who do you go thru? I'll have to check it out.

Vicki

Vicki, I think most places have about a £5 delivery charge. But as you can see, if you shop online, you're more likely to stay in budget to you can factor that £5 in.

£40/week for all three of us - also including the cats, washing powders, etc.  I make my own cleaning products in the interest of economy.  We buy most of our food from the farmer's market and only use supermarkets for staples like laundry supplies, cat litter, milk, etc.

I use Sainsburys.  For the most part they are pretty good.  Deliveries on time and substitutions are reasonable.  Sadly, they can't seem to get it into their heads that yes I am actually ordering 3KG of bananas.

Even with the £5 delivery charge factored in, I'm still saving between £20-30 per week.  If you (and any of your family that tags along) are an impulse buyer, this may really save you £'s.

This would be me all the way.  I am the perfect impulse buyer.  I could get out of the store for far less if I didn't stroll along and dream about what I could make or what looks good.  I enjoy grocery shopping so it's dangerous for me.  Even with a list!!!
