There's a sweet little old neighbor lady who lives across the street from us -- about 80-ish. A year or two before I moved here, she was mugged (on our street, not raped) -- beat up & her purse stolen by a couple teenage yobs. She had about 5 quid on her. She has permanent nerve damage from the beating she took, which has rendered her more infirm in her old age. Thing is - where we live is relatively safe -- I don't feel unsafe, it's our high street, & there are regular police foot patrols, etc.
The lady's SIL (who lives two doors down from us) says it was simply a 'window of opportunity' thing -- after dark when she was walking back from Morrisons & she was a vulnerable target. The bright sides to the story: she was helped by passersby after the attack, the perpetrators were caught & punished, AND a young lad they knew found her purse (with IDs etc still inside) a few days later & returned it.
