I went in person to Chicago for mine. I got there early, as they recommended, about an hour before they opened. I was the first person in, and had a backpack with me, full of papers and photos that they didn't even need. Normally, you'd drop off your stuff in the a.m., then come back at about 4 pm to pick it up, with (hopefully) your new visa. She processed mine right away, in about 10 minutes. I was walking out of the building, with visa in hand 10 minutes
BEFORE they oficially opened!!!

So you can get lucky.
You could probably come home later that same day. You'll know by the end of the business day if you got the visa or not. As long as you're not a terrorist or criminal, they'll probably let you in. I wouldn't worry...
