Well I have always HATED my first name! I got teased all through my younger days in middle school.

Which is why I go by MeShell....

So I decided when and if I ever had kids I would name them something that they could not be teased about...So my eldest daughter is Cassandra Danielle and the youngest is Caitlin Elizabeth.......

Speaking of names,  I notice a lot of names repeated over and over.

I work with a Catherine, a Cat and a Katie.
My brother-in-law is Ben, my landlord is Ben, and the client my husband has worked with longest is Ben.
At four different employment agencies I am registered with, my representative is named Claire.  At one of them, I have a Claire for temp jobs and a Clara for permanent jobs.

My work colleague's cousin just named her son - get this! - Neo.  As in 'The Matrix'.  I'm dead serious.

We don't have any names picked out for this one.  Think we'll wait and see.

With our daughter, we wanted to name her a Scots Gaelic name.  We had one Hispanic name and several Scots Gaelic names.  She looks - to anyone who's seen her - very, very Scots.  And she looked mostly like an Eilidh, which is what we called her.  We decided to anglicise the name, however, when I met a Canadian wifey on the ward who told me her niece back in Canada is constantly called 'eye-lid'.  Our daughter is Aillidh Cristina.

Expat your "eye-lid" story reminds me of an Irish girl I met who told me her cousins in Canada had wanted to give their daughter an irish name so they called her Siobahn.  Lovely, except they thought it was pronounced "SYO-BARN"  and it wasn't til some of the Irish family went over to visit they found out their mistake!

We chose Ethan's first name while I was still pregnant and his middle name when he was a few days old.  There is a thread somewhere about all the debates over his names. Ethan was the only boy's name we both really liked, and we had no idea it would end up the 12th most popular in England last year! Ethan's middle name is Xazar (pronounced Khazar) - the Persian name for the Caspian Sea as my father's family comes from Rasht province in Iran which is on the Caspian coast.  It was really important to me to give him a Persian middle name but it took ages to find one we both liked.  In the end it was my dad who came up with Xazar, as I liked Caspian but that's Russian not Persian.  One of my husband's nicknames for Ethan is "X-man"  ;D

I LOVE Luis-Alfredo for a boy.  BUT, it was the name of a character from a Mexican soap opera I used to watch w/my mom and sister.  So I'd never hear the end of it if we called a boy that.

WAAAAAA!!!

I like Laeticia for a girl.  But back home everyone would just call her 'Letti'.

It's a delicate balance, particulary w/multi-cultural families . . .  :-\\\\

HYSTERICAL!!! ;D ;D

I used to know a Kazar (same pronunciation, different spelling) in Rhode Island! He was from Pakistan.

Son #1 Noah Mathew

Daughter Abigail Elizabeth

Son # 2 Luke Joshua

If you want to hear some really funny baby names talk to Maternity unit staff.  There was an OB nurse in the US saying she had a patient who had twins and named them Orangejello and Lemonjello.   Patients have tried to name their baby girl vagina.  They are uneducated, hear the name thrown about on the maternity ward and think it sounds pretty not knowing what it means.  I have heard  that happens a lot.   I can't imagine it.

LOL! I went to grade school with an unfortunate girl named Regina (not pronounced Regeena). You can imagine.

I often hear it 'See-oh-bahn' from North Americans.  But then again, we have an Irish lecturer, brilliant and accomplished, who is constantly referred to by students who can't be bothered to remember her name as 'some Irish lady with black hair.'  Their faces always drop when I say, 'Oh, you must mean DOCTOR Kelly.'

That reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where he can't remember his new girlfriend's name but knows it rhymes with a part of the female anatomy. He keeps calling her "Mulva"  ;D  - turns out her name is Dolores...

I have an Indian husband so we have tried to come up with names that are common to both cultures. We have decided on Maya Rose for a girl and Jay for a boy. We really struggled with boys names so if anyone has any suggestions of names that are both Indian and English, maybe Jay could have a middle name!

I have a friend who worked at a pediatrician's office.  They had patients named Martini and Rossi.  Twins.  No joke.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

I know someone here with a little boy named 'Atreyu'.  I asked her if she was a big fan of the book, "The Neverending Story".  She just gave me a blank look and said "There's a book?"  ???
When I am grown-up I will understand how BEAUTIFUL it feels to administrate my life effectively.

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.

But never fear, gentlemen; castration was really not the point of feminism, and we women are too busy eviscerating one another to take you on.

I have a niece named evelyn grace, eevie for short.  People gave my sister such sh*t for this at first because it was old fashioned, but everyone loves it now.  he little brother is going to be named Joshua Ryan when he pops out in November.

My mother's name is Evelyn. If I ever had a girl I'd definitely use the name- I think the nickname Evie (eevie, not evvy) is cute for a munchkin, and it seems like it would "age" well.

My son is Jasper.  When we were thinking of names we wanted to choose something different, but not too weird, and Jasper kept creeping to the top of our list.  We didn't know if he was a boy or girl while I was pregnant, and we could never really settle on a girl's name we loved.  Also, I felt a little odd picking a name before meeting him, but it really fits his personality spot-on.  I guess there was a reason I kept coming back to that name - I think he was letting me know that's what it was. :)

For anyone interested, here's a great website about baby names.  I think it only uses US data, but it's fun to play with nonetheless.  I found out that my name was most popular twenty years before I was born!
