Yes, My husband and I found this out the hard way as we had no clue our daughter would need a VISA in her passport too! I just thought she would go under mine but NO! When I went home in April and tried to come back through--I couldn't because Isa's passport didnt have a stamp in it. Needless to say I got through crying and pleading with them but got a penalty in her passport, even though her dad is an Italian citizen ...they said next time I leave on her US Passport, she will be denied til its taken care of. So its been at home office now for almost 6 months....and who knows when we will get it back and we can go home again!

Not saying you're wrong, but let's respect Dannygirl's decision.   I'm sure she appreciates the information.  The child wouldn't be here illegally as such, but if s/he leaves the UK, would need a visa if coming back to live here.

Thank you Britwife.  I don't mind it if some of the people on here like to make the forum more than what it needs to be, I just figure that they have nothing better to do.  I listen to the positive statements about the topic because that's all I wanted.  I have received some really nice notes from the majority of the people and I have even showed them to Andrew.  He thinks it's great that this web site is here for Americans to have a support system for one another.  It's also nice to know that there are other mothers who have felt the same way that I have been feeling recently.  It gives me hope that I will also find more positive times in this country.
The day I met my son is the day I became me.  I thank him for that.

Give the Sickle cell society a look through ..they might be able to give you contacts of groups in your area ...or maybe forward your midwife's details so they can give HER some tips.... ;D
But never fear, gentlemen; castration was really not the point of feminism, and we women are too busy eviscerating one another to take you on.

I think the point was to show dannygirl that she needs to think about these things because it wasn't clear from her response that she'd actually made a decision regarding citizenship, etc. of her unborn child.  Considering all the things she has on her plate and her frustration with life here, maybe she hadn't considered the ramifications of not having citizenship for the baby.

I don't think anyone was being malicious.  I certainly wasn't, and I don't think peedal was either.  Sometimes people need reminders of stuff like this because the rules are different here.  In the US, a baby has US citizenship simply by being born in the US, regardless of marital and immigration status of its parents.  It's easy to assume the same rules apply here, even though that's not the case.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

Alica, I was just wondering if you know anyone that has sickle cell because you seem to be more knowledgeable about it than my midwife or GP.  I have found the links you suggested to be very helpful.

Since my "ignore" facility doesn't seem to be working - dannygirl, it would be much appreciated if you would keep your sanctimonious PM's to yourself.  I'm glad you really feel that you don't need anyone's help on things like immigration - that you know it all.

Maybe you can pass on your vast wealth of information to others as well, rather than just going on about how much Americans are hated here.

Or maybe it's just SOME Americans are hated here... >:(

Peedal you are sooooo right.  I don't know how I could have been so stupid.  If it wasn't for you ever so helpful advise I don't know where I would be.

Right, wrap it ladies.  Since it can't be taken privately, the public bit must end here.

Dannygirl, I hope that all goes well with your baby.  The first year I was in the UK was difficult for me.  With your illness and pregnancy it must be hard.  I knew a girl in the States with sickle cell and her doctor told her not to have have children, so I can't image what your body must be going through.  Good luck,  maybe you will start to Like it Here!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately I don't sorry...I do know of parents with children with sickle cell but not personally (through work) I'm a student child nurse...I think the best is to give SCS a check....perhaps get assistance in starting your own support group in your area through them...you can always give NHS direct on referring you to a better GP service

Just another note - you do realize that if you're not married at the time of the child's birth, that your child does NOT have UK citizenship?

Just a quick note to clear this up because it's come up before an will no doubt come up again.  Although the baby will not have UK citizenship if it's born before you're married, you will have NO PROBLEM getting the baby UK citizenship after you're married.  It's called legitimizing the birth(getting married) and your baby will be eligible for all it citizen's rights.

Nomad-wouldn't it be easier to get the baby a Italian passport rather than a visa?

Just curious as to what happens if they never marry?  Can the child claim UK citizenship if his parents aren't married but can prove paternity?

Don't think so.  In the case of unmarried parents, the British nationality must come from the mother.  It works the same way for children of US citizens born abroad.
