Raising a USA flag?
« on: August 06, 2005, 02:36:40 PM »

If you are raising a USA flag in another country? You shouldn't be there.

You're just a lousy colonist.

"The artist is not a person endowed with free will who seeks his own ends, but one who allows art to realize its purposes through him. As a human being he may have moods and a will and personal aims, but as an artist he is 'man' in a higher sense - he is 'collective man', a vehicle and molder of the unconscious psychic life of mankind"

OK, I'm one of the people on UKY who loves the UK and has no wish to ever live in the US again for the rest of my life. But even I think that's a pretty silly comment, Seagoddess. What's wrong with putting up a flag? It's not something I'd do, but I don't think it means you shouldn't be living here! When I lived in the US, I'd see people putting up Italian flags all the time ... I thought it was a nice cultural touch. People living in the UK have come from all over the world -- what's wrong with remembering that?

I don't raise a USA flag in the states and won't be raising one in the UK.  BUT...to each their own.  Live and let live....etc.

Your comment seems a wee bit harsh.... :-\\\\

No doubt man... i wouldnt raise a US flag, and i would probably feel slightly cringe-y if i saw one over here, but ... give it a rest.

My parents' neighbours (in NC) are English and they fly the Union Jack year-round.  And?  ::)

I don't see a problem.   The U.N. building in NYC has dozens of flags outside.   I've seen pictures of St. Patrick's Day parades on Fifth Ave. with dozens of Irish tricolors flying.

I've flown various small flags from my car's antenna here on certain days, including the Stars & Stripes on July 4, the English flag on St. George's day, etc.

uh- I live the US currently and because I'm British I have my little union jack on my car. When I return to England if I see a neighbour with an American flag, I'll think nothing but... Oh, I wonder if they are american?

Back to the subject....I don't think there is anything wrong with it but I wouldn't do it.

I never was one to fly the American flag or wear flag related stuff but it's more of a personal preference. It doesn't  bother me either way.  I seem to see the flying of the Union Jack as more of a sport related thing, over here, though- usually hanging out of an  upstairs window hehe But I would find it odd to see an American flag flying by itself over here. Probably as someone said having both the English and American flags flying would make more sense.

It's just tooo easy to get crazed about things.  Fly it if you want to, is what I say hehe

If you can all handle the controversy,  a little trivia to remember is that strictly speaking the British flag is properly called a Union Jack only when flown as a jack (a small flag) on the bow of a ship.

A regular U.K. flag flown elsewhere is technically known as just the Union Flag.

I, personally, don't fly any flags, but, if any Americans want to fly a US Flag while living in England, I say go for it.  I saw one just outside my town, on a home, and it warmed my heart.  You should be proud of where you are from, wherever you are, and if flying your country's flag makes you feel good, I'm not bothered.

I don't see a problem with flying an American Flag in another country if one wants.  Living in the states, and in a small rural comunity even, I see flags from all around the world flown here.  I see a lot of flags from Mexico since we have a large Hispanic population that has migrated here.  The lady that lives across the street from me was a "war bride" who married her husband after WWII and moved to the US from England.  She was in the Royal Air Corp and he was in the US Air Force when they met.  I think she is a very cool older lady and I see nothing wrong with the fact that she flies both and American and a British flag at her home.

Perhaps it is because I am brain washed by the American news but I would be somewhat fearful of displaying the American flag in a forgin country.  Seems it would make me in some way an instant target.

I'm not trying to be rude.  I'm just playing around.  :)

I agree with most of the posters on this thread.  There is nothing wrong with flying one's flag.  Everyone has the right to be proud of their homeland.  We have lots of Brits living in my old hometown in Pennsylvania and they fly the union flag outside their houses.  Everyone thought that was pretty cool.
