looking for a good vet
« on: August 07, 2005, 10:52:46 PM »
I don't know if this is the best place for a post about trying to find a vet in my area.  Maybe there should be a board titled pets?

But I was wondering if anyone knows of a good vet in the Bath area?  Or a good on-line resource that lists vets.

thanks!

Purina petfood has a vet-finding service: http://www.purina.co.uk/index.asp?frame=/dog/find_vet.asp

I think your best bet is to ask other people once you get to Bath. I can email my cousin in Bath if you'd like and find out where they take their cat, but I'm not sure how much help that will be. You have a dog, right? I think it also depends on where you're going to be located in Bath -- you're going to want somewhere convenient. My cousin and hubby are right in central Bath on one of the beautiful old crescents. Do you know yet where you'll be?

thanks, I tried the site, but the server dies when ever I put in  BA2 7AY.  I will try again.  Yeah, we will be in or near central bath - especially seeing that we do not want to deal with cars in the first 6 months-1 year.
Any vet would be great to start with, so at the very least I know of one by the time I arrive.  When we were there we walked by a holistic vet in widcombe and talked with him a bit.  Are these common?  I'd perfer a western med. vet however.
Thanks for the help

One of the most important links ever: http://www.rcvs.org.uk/Templates/Internal.asp?NodeID=90012&int1stParentNodeID=89644
(You can see which vets are addicted to their own vet drugs here/vets accused of animal cruelty and any complaint against them)

Hope this helps.

My pleasure
 :)

I have a noted breed judge contact with a friend in Bath, I'll ask for a personal recommendation, but it might take a while as I have to write snail mail to her. But I won't forget.

I emailed my cousin, Grant, so hopefully they'll get back to me with the name of their vet. They are in the process of moving from Widcombe (Widcombe Terrace) to a new (old) house closer to the center of the city.

Oh my god!  Widcombe is where my partner and I want to end up!  Can we have their place!  lol.  Did they rent/own?  Do they have any suggestions for us?  We want to rent atleast for the first 6 months.  Then we might consider buying.  We are looking for atleast a two bedroom.  Widcombe is our favorite because of it's ideal location between my partner's university and the city center/rail station.

LOL! Sorry, they owned, but they've sold already. Right now they're renting a big old farmhouse about a half-hour from Bath while their new house is being finished up for them. They can't wait to get back to Bath! The old house was gorgeous, but massive. It was one of the very old crescent houses -- and was included on a lot of the walking tours of the city. It's just the two of them now that their daughter is off on her own, so I think they felt it was too big. Although, I think it was probably too big for three people! My cousin did B&B for a while -- connected to one of the theatres in Bath; she only put up performers, musicians, etc. It was a spectacular old Georgian house, but I think their new one is much the same except slightly more manageable and closer to the centre of everything.

Widcome is a lovely area, though, so I'm sure you guys will be very happy there! Still no word from them re: a vet, but I'll let you know as soon as I hear anything.

That's awesome.  And being a performer myself, I love to hear that someone for once selectively put us first rather than discriminated against us.  ;-)

In finding both their homes did they have any problems with having a dog(s)?  When we went to a number of real estate agencies, they seemed to give us the impression that our dog would drastically limit our options :(

Did they go through an agent that specialized with people with pets?  That is, if you happen to know.  Just curious.  ;-)

thanks

Well, they're loaded so have no trouble buying a house anywhere. Don't even get me started on the London flat and the private plane.  :-\\\\

I got a reply from my cousin's husband re the vet. They used to use this one: http://www.any-uk-vet.co.uk/waterlow/. However, she has apparently sold the practice and he can't vouch for the new people. I'm just guessing that they have the same telephone number, but I can't be sure. Still, it's a good starting point. Hope that was at least some help! :)
