Best visa to apply for.. I need help!
« on: August 08, 2005, 10:56:45 AM »
I'm needing some advice from you knowledgable people. I'm an older woman (retired) who is planning to marry a British citizen within the next year. I know I've got to go back to the States to apply for a fiancee visa. I'm retired with a great pension and enough savings to last the rest of my life.  Here are my questions:

1. Is there any other visa to get because of my financial situation? I think the UK government wants an ongoing assurance of assets.. not a pension type one which could be wiped out?

2. Must I marry within six months of having the fiancee visa or can that be extended? I think it can not.

3. Is there anything else I should know?

Thanks for any help.

1.  You could look into "retired person of independent means" so your stay in the UK isn't tied to being married within 6 months.

2.  However, it is possible to get a fiancee visa extended.  It's not guaranteed, but it is possible.

3.  There is probably a lot more you need to know, once you decide which way to go!  And we're more than happy to help you fill in the blanks as you go along!

The Retired Person of Independent Means can be an option if your annual pension income is about £30,000+, you can demonstrate a 'close' tie to the UK, you plan on having a principal domicile here, and you have other assets.  It allows you to come and go as you please, but you can never legally work whilst on it.

An immigration solicitor can help you with this.
