Almost there - need positive thoughts
« on: August 10, 2005, 07:09:16 AM »
I am no longer a newby and have already had a very gracious welcome to this forum. Thank you all. The "big move" is about to happen. September 1st is when I fly over.  I am so completely stressed out with trying to get things in place here - sell my house, wrap up work, put stuff in storage, PACK, get rid of my junk, details, details, details. Plus there is the sadness of saying good-bye to family, friends, my cats and Keesha my dog. Of course I hope Keesha will be joining me in November if everything goes as planned, but she is oooollllldddd and the reality is that she may not make it.  :\\\'( I just need some words of encouragement to help assure me that I am doing the right thing moving to England, sight unseen, for two years. I am lucky to have a good job waiting for me and a place to live with a couple that seems like wonderful people.

Anyway, I guess I just needed to put my feelings in writing to people who have been through this. Thanks.

I think you're doing the right thing definitely! It's an opportunity that only comes around once in a lifetime. Sure, you can expect loneliness and plenty of homesickness, especially if you have lots of family and friends back home... but eventually you will feel settled. (Are you moving over with anyone? That might make it easier.) Plus, the fact you're here two years is especially good, as you aren't tied to England and you can always move back at the end of it if you were happier in the US.  :)
Plans on hold 'cuz Brexit

I agree with Honeybee....look at this as an opportunity not to be missed...many years ago I lived in Germany for 2 years...it didnt upset me so much because I knew I was always going to be back in the States again...Like you said, you have a job to come too, some nice folks to live with...give it the most positive attitude you can, there are so many things to see and do over here....and I hope your dog can come later as well, that will make it that much more homey to you...good luck!  :)

Have you never been to Britain before? What I have seen of it is staggeringly beautiful. I love it here, and think I may have found my permanent home. What part of the country are you moving to?

I came up here last September myself, having only been a tourist before. I came here with a determination not to leave, and a couple of months later, I was able to bring my wife and cats up.

I know what you are going through, with all the up to the last minute details you are trying to take care of. It's easy to get overwhelmed by it, and it really doesn't matter if you do let it overwhelm you, so long as you get on that plane! You'll have plenty of time in the air to wind down and relax as you head over here. Sounds as if you've got a really solid plan, and everything is pretty much taken care of for you up here. You'll be coming in time for the last of the nice summer weather, too!

Best of luck with everything, I know you're going to have a great journey!
