From the Pacific Northwest to the Firth of Forth
« on: September 23, 2003, 02:05:26 AM »
Greetings everyone!

I just wanted to introduce myself to the forum with a quick background.

I was born and raised in a small town in the Cascades of Washington State.  I am one of six daughters (my poor folks!).  Single and childless, I spent a year living in Edinburgh (2001-2002).  During that time, I met a great guy, and decided I wanted to stay forever.

I had to go back to the states for a year, but am returning to take up residence in a couple weeks (yes, I am counting the days too).  I hope to be able to stay on long-term, or even permanate...wish me luck!!

So, that's me in a nut shell.  I've been reading these posts for sometime now and am looking forward to being able to join in.

Cheers!!
Frances

Hi and welcome Frances and feel free to start posting right away.  These ladies (and gents) are great and have kept me sane despite not being in the UK yet.

Pretty impressive coming from 6 girls!  I look forward to hearing more about your jouney in the future!

Yes, after living in Edinburgh for a year, then making two month-long trips there while back in the states for a year, I have fallen more and more in love with the city.

My friends and family back home always want to know why I would want to live outside of my home town, let alone Scotland--I tell them that if they were to ever visit Edinburgh, they would understand.  I have even managed to fall in love with the weather!!

Yes it is one of those places that gets under your skin ... and the place we always think of first when we think about moving away from over populated smelly old London!

I wish you much luck and hope to see you around here...  although I will be scarse here for the next couple months preparing for move

Good luck on the moving preparations!!  I am lucky enough to live in a small town that my whole family lives in, so it is pretty easy for me.  My furniature remains in my house, and firends/family keep an eye on it for me.  Daddy stores (and sometimes drives) my car (which is also the love of my life).  I can not imagine how difficult it would be to get everything in order without the help of my family/friends.

Good luck with your move!!

Frances

I'm in Cle Elum, WA.  It's just about the center of the state in the middle of the Cascades.  My best friend moved to Portland a few years back, so I make the 4.5 hour drive to see her a couple times a year (then she comes to Cle Elum a couple times too).

Eugene sure is lovely!!  For that matter, ALL of the Pacific NW is--not that I am biased ;)

Hi Frances and welcome to UKY!  I saw in your post that you were moving over in a few weeks.  Have you made the move yet?
Life should NOT be a journey to the
grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well
preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand,
wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and
screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

I fly back this Monday--I can't wait to get back either, I miss so many things about Scotland.  I'll miss my car and my family, but I can always go back to the States to visit both.

Only a couple days now...

Frances

Well me being based in Glasgow I have to say I much prefer Glasgow ("Glasgow's Miles Better") ;D you know...Ha! Ha! That's the town phrase...

So you must be making that trans-atlantic journey as I type. Bleuch - I hate that flight to the West Coast. What a killer. Having lived here for 11 years, plus studying here in the 80s (London) - I can't even count how many times I have had to do that trip!

I seem to notice soooo many Yanks around here at the moment - I guess because school's just started up...

I don't reckon the weather is all that different from the Pac Nor West. As I type I look out to the scenery like the trees in the park outside my window...and their red, orange and yellow leaves - set against the backdrop of the gray sky...Wow. It was a HUGE adjustment for me - being from Sunny Cali but adjust I did...

And all my friends totally comprehend why I moved here. Scotland is the most beautiful country in the world - I have to say. That said, I love the San Francisco/Bay Area too. Best of both worlds me thinks.
Hope youre trip was a smooth one and that things work out for you better than they did for me :)
