Wanamakers!!! I forgot about them!! I used to work for the partner store, Woodward and Lothrop - before they went bust. Is Wanamakers still there?
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

In the first year, Monopoly sold a million sets, a figure unknown in the world of games, and it has remained the best-selling board game in America ever since.

A funny story about Monopoly....

My uncle was born shortly after the Monopoly craze hit the US in the 1930's.  This was back when women were made to stay in hospitals for 7-10 days after giving birth, so my grandmother was stuck in bed for over a week.  A friend brought her a Monopoly set so that she would have something to do to pass the time until she was released.  Because it was such a huge hit, everyone wanted to play with her.  She said she played Monopoly every day for over a week - - she absolutely HATED the game for the rest of her life!

Sadly, Wanamakers is gone.  Philly has never been the same to me.  One of the sculptures of an eagle that was in the store proudly now sits in the lobby of the high school I graduated from-Chichester High School- home of the Chichester Eagles. It was bought by the alumni of one of the graduating classes and given as their gift to the school.  Chichester is pronounced Chi(with a long i)chester.  The lands for our township were origanally granted to Lord Chichester of England.

I've even found them at Tesco! I have yet to find the ginger ones in the UK, though, so a friend in the US sends me emergency shipments of them. I adore Altoids!!!

A British friend and I were having a discussion at our local pub a few weeks ago, and he swore Monopoly was invented here in the UK.  I bet him a pint that it wasn't, but I had never really thought about it before.
When I got home, I googled it, and yes, it IS American, and started being produced in 1935 by Parker Brothers.  HA!   Grin

...

P.S. The UK version is distributed by Hasbro (a division of "Parker", not "Parker Brothers"), and is made in Ireland.

I always thought Monopoly was a British game because that's the only version we ever had when I was a child. When we moved to the US and my friends and I played Monopoly, they were all really confused! Bond Street? Marylebone?? Hee!

Hasbro is, if anyone's interested, a Rhode Island company, based in lovely downtown Pawtucket.

By the way, you are all aware of the other meaning of "crumpet" here, aren't you?
