Darlin', I like them to walk to the table, plop themselves on the plate and hand me the knife & fork!!  ;D

Exactly!  I want a steak so rare that if you had a tourniquet you could save it.  Well done steak resembles shoe leather at its best and charcoal at its worst.
I was born in the Summer and at Night...my mother named me AUTUMN DAWN.  True story.

I'm a medium rare girl...nicely pink but not too bloody.  And my fav marinade is aged balsamic vinegar, a touch of soy sauce and garlic paste...heaven!

Well done is the only way to go.  Pinky bits, yuk.  Just like covering your steak in a bacteria-laden sauce.  Boak.

mmmmmmmmmmmm bacteria sauce.  ;D I like mine pink, but not flick your bic. To me, well done kills the taste of the steak and enhances the flavour of the charcoal. But then it's all personal taste.

I like mine medium rare. Anyhow, for those who do like A-1, we think we've found something in the "gourmet" section of Jarrold's, a Norwich department store. I'm not sure how many other branches they have. It smells the same and we'll be trying it tonight with our 6 years together steaks.

Anything less then medium well makes me ill.  I'm not to picky about my steak sauce, so I made do with HP.  How about a good garlic and basil butter to dip it in?

I like mine medium...still pink but not mooing. :P Sometimes I have sauce...sometimes I don't. It just depends how good the steak is. I don't like A-1 because it's way too overpowering for me. I usually just use a little HP and it's perfect.

Right, this is what I found... This will not break the bank to make.

Steak Sauce

2 Tablespoons mustard
1/2 cup ketchup
salt, pepper, garlic powder, to taste
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon Worchestershire Sauce, to taste

Mix all ingredients together. The Sauce should have the color of
a dark rusty red/brown. Adjust amount of mustard or ketchep to
get the color. After the steak has been broiled on each side coat
the steak with the sauce broil for 3 or four minutes tun and repeat.
The sauce left on the broiler is great if soaked up with a peice
of bread.

Steak Sauce (similar to A-1)

1/2 cup orange juice
1/2 cup raisins
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup light vinegar
2 Tbsp Dijon mustard
1 Tbsp grated orange peel
2 Tbsp ketchup
2 Tbsp chili sauce

Bring all of these ingredients to a brisk boil for 2 minutes. Stir
constantly. Remove from heat. Allow to cool to lukewarm. Put
mixture through blender on high speed till it is pureed and smooth.
Funnel into bottle. Cap tightly and refrigerate to use within 90
days. Makes about 1 1/2 cups sauce.

Heinz 57 Sauce

1/2 cup raisins
2/3 cup Heinz ketchup
1 tsp chili powder
1 tsp seasoned salt
4 oz applesauce
2 Tbsp bottled Italian Dressing

Put all ingredients in a blender and blend on/off for 2 minutes on
high or until smooth.

good recipe lists ...but I think DC doesn't have a blender

The first recipe does not require a blender. That should work, then.

We had hamburgers tonite for dinner...  I busted out a bottle of A1 that my mom sent over.   ;D  yummmm...

My husband said that he thought it tasted like it had more of a lime flavour  than HP.  Reading all of those great recipes saucywitch has posted, I am wondering if it may be a bit of citrus that you need to add to your HP to make it taste more like A1..?  ???  Orange/lemon/lime juice?

Just a thought, although I haven't ever tried it myself...   :)

Let us know if you figure it out.. I'd be curious to know if HP could be sucessfully (and easily) altered.  i don't mind HP, but prefer A1 anyday.  I guess this is what relocated Brits go through trying to find the perfect baked beans in the states?  *lol*

Good luck on your quest.   ;D

Don't know where you are, Lost Angel, but thr Jarrold's version did the trick. It was very much like A-1 only more intense in that you needed to use less.

I never heard of Jarrold's, and unfortunately don't think there is one near me...   :-\\\\

Have you tried something called Cross and Blackwell Steak and Chop Sauce?

You might also try tweaking Daddy's Brown Sauce or HP sauce by adding anything sweet and/or tangy.  Be creative!

Real A1 has all sorts of stuff in it.  Among other things, it contains malt vinegar, dates, mango chutney, apples, raisins and orange marmalade. It's a complex thing and a thing of beauty at that! (I may be vegan now, but I can still use it to dip chips in!)  I do miss A1!

Here are some interesting sites:

www.a1sauce.com

Good luck in your search, and let us know when you've made the perfect copy! :)
