Whatever crabby airline lady!!!!!!!!
« on: August 13, 2005, 06:56:29 AM »
So, I bought a ticket to Birmingham a few weeks ago for my trip in November. Tonight I was looking at my flight info and noticed my itinerary online didn't match my e-ticket/receipt. Called Continental to find they changed the flights! Great, I booked a ticket based on the times working with my schedule, not knowing they could just change it after purchase! Ughhhh! Dealt with an annoying woman who just kept saying "airlines change schedules all the time what do you want me to do about it?" Oh the frustration! What do I want her to do? I want her to give me back the ticket I bought in the first place!!!!!!!!! No can do! Well, long story shorter... after I got done with her fun, I called back and talked to a very nice man that refunded my non-refundable ticket and I purchased another one with NWA! Fingers crossed there will be no more messing around now! Anyone every had this happen??? It sucks!!! Oh well, now instead of sitting in Newark for the six hours crabby airline lady wanted me to, I'll be stopping by Amsterdam for a quick peek  ;D I am sure the airport there is lovely! Thanks for letting me whine, feel much better now  :-* :-X

Don't worry... Amsterdam (Schipol, i assume?) airport is very nice, with lots of shopping and celebrity-spotting!  :)

OMG -- I would love to have a six hour layover in Amsterdam (or more)! ;D  I love Amsterdam.  You prolly just have a short one, but if you had more time -- you could easily take the train from Schipol to Centraal Station (takes less than 30 minutes) & explore a bit of the city.  The airport is cool though & a great duty-free selection too.

Yeah, the part of Schipol I was in reminded me of a mall!

SillySnip, I've had that happen to me a couple of times. It does suck when you chose a certain day/time for a reason!

The Amsterdam airport is great--a much better place to kill some time rather than Newark airport ;)

Yeah hopefully it all worked out for the best, was an eyeopener though. Silly me thought if I bought the ticket it was set and couldn't be changed without my knowledge. Oh well I learn something new every few days  ;)

Schipol looks very cool, I checked it out online a little. Will be there for three hours one way, and just an hour the other way. Should give me a little time to check it out I guess. But I won't be brave enough to leave the airport, you have to understand I am the most directionally challenged person I know. No matter how lovely Amsterdam may be, I surely don't want to get stuck there!  :-\\\\

I was once trapped at Newark for four hours in a snowstorm-with three tiny children.  Not one of my fondest travel experiences.

There are tours than runs directly from/back to the airport for ppl with long layovers. We did one of the city tours on our way to Turkey. I am not usually a tour person, but this was a fun way to see a bit of the city w/o worrying about getting lost.

Have fun! :)

Thanks Courtney, I'll look at it a bit more when I have more time, but still makes me nervous to wander off too far.... I've been lost in more places than I could ever count. Also, not sure three hours would give me time to see much before having to board my next flight? I am excited though, I'd much rather see Amsterdam, even if only the airport. Nothing against Newark  ;D

Amsterdam isn't a very large city at all really -- the 'proper' city part of Amsterdam...we covered most of it on foot.  Do think about a short tour at least -- if they offer one.

Anyone every had this happen???

Every single time I fly.  I book my tickets a few months in advance, I usually get an email about a month before the flight saying they've changed the times.  Luckily it's only a around 20 min here or there, but on my last trip, they changed it by 1 1/2 hours (in my favor).

I'm supprised that they didn't inform you of the change by email.

BTW - We never chanced going into town with only 3 hours (the one time we went we had a whole day).  But the shops are great and the restaurants upstairs are better than the cafes down stairs.
Dream a dream of England .......... Some day

The rudest airport staff I ever encountered was at Schiphol in Amsterdam. I was moving to Sweden and flying KLM from Los Angeles-Amsterdam-Stockholm. I brought my cat with me from the US and they lost her at the airport. This was when she was supposed to be taken to the vet facility that they have there at the airport. I paid extra for this service. After waiting and worrying for 5 hours they finally found her in the lost cargo garage that they have. This was in late June! She hadn't been fed, given water, or allowed to use a liter tray. I asked to see her but they refused stating that I needed to get onto the next plane to Stockholm. Then they had the nerve to try to have me pay extra money since I had missed my earlier flight because of waiting to find my cat! When my cat and I (she had to ride cargo) finally arrived in Stockholm she had no fur left on her nose, only blood because she had clearly tried to scratch her way out of her carrier. She also was covered in her filth of feces and urine. She stunk and was dehydrated and hungry. She had been in that carrier for over 24 hours at that point because there was a delay at LAX airport, and then when I had "missed" my flight from Amsterdam I had to be routed to Copenhagen with a 2 hour wait and then onto Stockholm. I wasn't able to see her during any of this time. When I finally saw her I cried so hard and it took everything in my power for me to not yell at the staff (though the Stockholm staff had nothing to do with it). Instead I sucked it up and later wrote a letter to KLM at Schiphol stating my and my cat's experience. I never even got an apology, in fact I never heard anything. The Schiphol staff claimed that she went missing because there were no tags or papers on her carrier. Ironically the staff in Stockholm said that they did not understand this since it was the first thing that they noticed on her carrier. I had laminated papers that were duct taped to three sides of the carrier. I also attached a food baggy to the side so that she would have her food at the vet facility. Apparently that was a huge waste, in the end I paid $150 extra for services for her that she never received. And what's worse in that they didn't seem to care at all.

Edited to add: I chose KLM based on their great track record of transporting pets. I researched it at length before moving and finally chose them because of this. I didn't even live in Los Angeles, I lived in San Diego but because KLM doesn't fly from there my father drove me and my cat to LAX so that we could fly on this wonderful airline that would treat my cat well. I still get tears in my eyes when I remember seeing her after the ordeal.

Needless to say I will never fly KLM again. Because of that it is also unlikely that I will go to Schiphol either. I realize that it is a lovely airport but I am still so angry over their negligence and refusal to accept any responsibility that it makes me bitter. I'm sorry for the rant I usually don't do this.

Yes it is and I feel terrible guilt about it. I couldn't leave her in the US she is a part of my family and just the thought made me sick. After I arrived here we arranged for a vet visit since she had no fur on her nose only bloody skin and I was worried about an infection. I also wondered if she was hurt in the leg since she was walking a bit funny. The vet said to bring her in a carrier. We tried to get her in but she literally fought for her life. She hissed violently and scratched at us and bit me on the hand even though she had never done that before. She was so terrified of being put on a plane again. My SO called the vet and explained what had happened with the plane flights and asked if we could bring her in wearing a cat harness instead. The vet was horrified over her experience and said "absolutely, yes!". She has never been able to go in a carrier again. In the end one of her legs was sprained which was wrapped at the vets, the fur grew back on her nose but the emotional scars for her are far from over as is evident every time she hears a loud car, motorcycle or even the vacuum cleaner. All of those sounds remind her of the airplanes. She never had this issue before and I had her for 3 years before moving here.

When we move to the UK we will come via ferry. There is no way I will put her through a horrifying plane ride again, I'd sooner die.  :-[

Did you make a formal complaint to KLM about it?
