Traveling after an Operation
« on: August 15, 2005, 04:01:20 PM »
Hi all, just a hypothetical question really.  Say someone were to have a minor operation a few weeks before they were to travel overseas.  Is it possible to request a bulkhead seat ahead of time?  Would they need a Dr's note?

Thanks

Yes to both questions, Stacey.  Call the airline as soon as you know your travel details.  They are most accomodating once they are sure your doc says you are OK to go.  And you can get wheelchair rides to and from the gate!  Wheeee! :D
When I find a funnier sig than twistedncynical's, it will be here.

My mom had something similar to your situation.  She called the airline, explained the situation and arrived with a doctors note.  They actually put here in the handicapped seat, it had more leg room, since they usually hold the bulkhead seats till right before check-in.

On allot of planes the bulkhead seats are located next to the emergency exits and you have to be able bodied to be able to open the door.......in the event of an emergency...........

Yes - I had knee surgery and had to get on a plane 2 weeks later...still in my brace and with crutches...I got in touch with the airline as soon as I could...didn't need a doc's note as it was quite noticable why I needed the extra leg room!

Me, too!  It was 10 days after I'd had my ACL reconstructed.  They also arranged to have one of those carts take me from the check-in to the gate, which was awesome b/c I needed surgery on the other knee a few weeks later and it was painful to get around even w/crutches.

They also upgraded me to business class at the last minute.  Woohoo!

No. The "bulkhead" seats are exactly that. The seats that are at the head of the bulk of the other seats in that class. The bulkhead seats are the seats immediately behind the partition that divides the cabins. You do have more leg room in those seats although I don't like them because they have the thicker arm rests to stow the tray table and as a result the arm rests don't raise up.
Most airlines do what they can to accommodate special needs passengers however bulkhead seats can never be guaranteed.

Thanks cicero :)  I have a new video phone I have been playing around with.

The key word here is "request". If I had a nickel for everyone that called my desk complaining they didnt get their requested seat I would be rich! Some guy actually called me from the plane one time! Can you believe that? He called my desk and was shouting I need to get him the seat her requested 3 weeks ago!!! Oy vey!
