Family Rail Card
« on: August 16, 2005, 11:23:39 PM »
Anyone have one?  Do you use it much?  Do you think it was worth the money?

Thanks!
When I am grown-up I will understand how BEAUTIFUL it feels to administrate my life effectively.

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.

Yup we have one.....don't use it a lot but it well worth the money! It paid for itself on the first trip. We only don't use it a lot because don't use trains a lot. It is a great excuse to convince my  15 year old to go with us though if we do want a day trip somewhere.

Well worth the money.  It pays for itself the first trip.   :)  We use ours all the time-well about once or twice a month, but it makes us much more likely to take the train instead of hte car and it's been great for spur of hte moment trips.  Plus, if used with 2for1 deals with museums and attractions you end up saving a packet.

That might just be my line but do look out for special offers on the website and leaflets in the stations.  Some of their offers are well worth doing.  Whereabouts are you going to be?

It may be cheaper to buy them in the States.

Dunno.  We went fora car instead, but it's also easier to travel with kids who are potty-trained, don't need a buggy, can entertain themselves for a while, etc.

How much are the family rail passes and can you use them anywhere in the UK? Does anyone have a site to go to for info. I am not planning on having a car, which I am actually excited about, but would love to get an idea of how much the train will cost and it sounds like a familly rail pass is the way to go.

It's a card that saves you money on  rail fares.  You can save 1/3 on adults and 60% on children.  Up to 4 adults and 4 children can use it.  It's really good if you're going to travel at all on the train.  The card itself costs £20 but it pays for itself very quickly.

Good point.  My girls are old enough that they're really good travelers and they quite enjoyed travelling by train the few times we've gone from Edinburgh to Aberdeen to board the ferry.  I'll poke around and see if there's any way to buy one from here, as we may need one upon arriving in the UK.
