As a child, we always had MW and something called (branded) 'Sandwich Spread' in the house -- which was also sweet-tasting, orangish and had sweet pickles in it.

I had that in England as a child! I loved it! It was my fave lunch!! I never knew it existed in the US, though. All those years I lived in the States, I never knew I could be enjoying the tangy wonder that is Sandwich Spread!! ;)

I remember when I was a kid my dad would eat that Sandwich Spread on saltine crackers with ketchup on it. [smiley=puke.gif] Ewwww!

I don't like Miracle Whip on sandwiches because it's too sweet but I've used it in recipes for crab salad and other salads and it was good in those.

Basically it's "Ham salad"... well half ham, and the other  half assorted luncheon meats.. we used to make it when I worked in a deli during my Uni years.. we'd grind up the ends of ham, bologna, old fashioned loaf and anything else that didn't have "things" in it.   Then you grind in some onion and celery add a bunch of sweet pickle relish, equal parts miracle whip and mayo and you've got Sandwich Spread... we'd make it up on Wednesday mornings and it would be gone by the end of the day.. we even had people ordering it in advance to make sure they could get some before it was all sold out.
Personally... I thought it was gross...lol

FOUND: today in Morrisons!  Along with Kraft Mayonaise.  I bought some although I can't remember if I actually like it.

You are a lifesaver! ;) :D  I dearly love my Miracle Whip.  My DH tried it when we were in the states and loves it now, too.  I will be making a trip to Morrison's...definitely!

I haven't heard of the ground up meat stuff either. :-X The stuff I was talking about was made by Kraft and was meatless. As far as I know it's still in the grocery stores now next to the mayo.

It's quite close to the deviled or potted meats in the US.

I can't remember MW. I know my grandmother used it in her tuna salad but I don't think I have ever had it other than that. What's the difference between MW and regular mayo? I don't care much for mayo to begin with.

That's it, Melissa! But I think it was made by Heinz in the UK.

Blech. I'm firmly in the "anti-MW" camp.  :-X I even find some "normal" mayo. to be too sweet.

I found that too with *name brand* mayo here....but Tesco brand with the generic label is nearly identical to Kraft on my taste buds.

Yes!!! And most of the low-fat ones, too - I think they try to "make up" for the lack of fat by making them sweeter. Blech!!! I haven't tried Tesco - I finally gave up and just stick with Hellman's now....
