Was wondering if there are any skiers or snowboarders out there? Does anyone have any info on any of the area mountains? Have also been looking for annual stats on snowfall in the UK, but can't find any, any suggestions?

I think Scotland is maybe the only place you're going to find snow in the UK. I think there are places you can snowboard indoors, though.

You can try Snowdonia.



Honestly, I think Scotland has the mountains that people ski at.  People tell me that Birmingham has snow-but I don't know about snowboarding and all that.

I think most people go to France or Switzerland for snowports.

The past two winters here in Newcastle (up north but near the coast, does that make a difference) we have had maybe a week of snow both years. Just a few inches on the ground. I have no idea how much snow they get in Scotland? I have been in the highlands in April and it snowed, but just a few flakes that didn't stay on the ground...never been there in the middle of the winter. The UK is not the place to come for outdoor snow sports!!! (But, you're just a short plane hop away from the alps!)

I agree, the Alps aren't far away - an easy flight and you can often get good deals.

We found this place on our honeymoon (we drove cross country from Liverpool to Boston), but didn't do any sports activities.  It is basically a huge mall, with indoor winter activities and an indoor mini-rock climbing area.

Everyone I know goes to other countries to ski...there are great deals out there!

Britain doesn't get anywhere near the snow it used to years ago.    I remember trying to get through tons of the stuff on the way to school during the winter of 1977/78.   I've not seen anything like it in England since then.   (And it seems incredible that these days an inch of snow overnight results in half the schools in the area being closed!)

The winters of 1947 and 1963 are on record as being particularly cold and snowy (although both are a little before my time).    If you do a UK Google search on "Winter 1947" or "Winter 1963" you'll find all sorts of references.

There was a winter like that in the 80s too. I think it was 82/83.  But yes it doesn't seem to happen any more.

Did you have to walk five miles through the snow uphill back then (to and from school)?

Hubby and I searched the internet this morning and saw some incredible ski areas in France. Does anyone know of any that are in the north of France, close to Paris?

North of France?  Um, no.  The weather up there is more like in the UK. 

Alps, that's the place to go.
