Referees for Citizenship App!!
« on: August 22, 2005, 12:28:12 PM »
Hello,

I will hopefully be applying for dual citizen ship in Feb 2006.... i have looked over some of the paperwork and noticed that you need two referees....has anyone acutually went through the process?  Who did you use as referees...the problem i have is that i haven't known anyone here for 3 years besides in laws....

In-laws and affines won't work as referees if you are going for the spousal naturalization.  But it's not something to worry about.  You are not required to apply simply because you have passed the residence hurdle, your ILR will continue to serve its purpose just like it says - indefinitely.

My two references were people from work.  But it was a bit of a struggle for me too I remember.  For marriage based citizenship applications, they should lower the amount of time you need to know someone as a reference.  They let you apply earlier but you'd practially have to meet someone the day you arrived and then keep in touch with them for the whole time until it was time to apply.  I think if the residency time is lowered for marriage based applications, the time you have to know your references should be too.

Anyway, is there no one at all you are aquainted with that you've known for the required time?  My back up reference was my brother-in-law's partner.  Perhaps there's someone like that in your life you could ask?

Wish I could share mine - I'm worried about hurting people's feelings as I can only ask 2 people to be my referees and I have more than that who want to!

Have you not made friends with ANY of your boyfriend/husband's friends in the entire time you've been here??

I'm planning on using work colleagues.  But my big problem is scraping together the money to apply!
