hummm have to admit DH used to have whole milk delivered and I couldn't deal with the cream on top, so we switched to semi.

Having milk delivered makes me feel like I'm helping out local farmers. (we live in a small village)

The milk doesn't have chance to get too warm as it's delivered around 5 and I'm up at 6.  ::)

We have ours delivered..Tuesdays, Thursday, and Saturdays..we get 2 pints on those days...but we usually end up with buying more.

Ours is a bit warm sometimes as our house faces the rising sun..but I whack it in the fridge and it is fine....

I'm another who's always buying milk. I generally pick it up every couple of days - that solves the problem of it going off quickly. I've learned to LOVE that things go bad here so quickly - it makes me feel far better about what I'm eating. It completely creeps me out to visit the US and see bread still feeling fresh and milk still smelling totally fine a week after it's been bought. In fact I even feel the same about veg - how much preservative must  be used to keep a tomato from rotting after being out on the counter top for a week!!!???

We used to have milk delivery - and will do again once I have a paycheck! Yippee! Our delivery service gave us a styrofoam box with cold packs to leave out on warm delivery days. And even our semi-skim came with some cream on top - I loved giving the bottle a good shake to mix it up - and it tasted soooooo yummy!!!

I agree that skim milk is tastier in the UK, but they do have good milk in the US. Hood is pretty much always tasty. The one thing that irks me about milk in the UK is that it goes off so quickly. It starts to smell after a couple days, even though I keep my fridge at the coldest setting. I go through a ton of milk as a result. :-\\\\

Start buying a smaller amount (assuming of course you buy litre bottles or whatnot). I guess it all depends, really, on how much you drink. We buy the biggest bottle we can fit in our fridge because I drink a lot of milk.

What bugs me about the milk here (and, really, its the only thing) is after a few days you get a wierd thin layer at the top. I'm not sure if it's cream or what but I have a hard time drinking it. I keep freaking about about milk membranes and stuff. Geez, I just realised what a freak I must sound like now.

Ok I really am a freak when it comes to certain foods and for some reason, though I have no idea why, I just couldn't get myself to try milk when I was in England. It makes no sense I know, but like I said I'm a freak  :P I am not big on milk to begin with! After reading this, when I go back in November now I'll feel better about trying it maybe. I would not be able to drink it though if it were delivered and had sat on the doorstep for any amount of time, that sets my freak meter off! Also, I can't understand how come eggs there are not refrigerated at the store???? Makes me nervous!

Nope! :P I just don't get why they go in the fridge once home, but not in the store??? I wouldn't drink milk straight from a cow either and I grew up on a farm, not a dairy farm granted, but no way! I don't like milk that much so when I do drink it, it has to be ice cold!

Im reading this and amazed how many people enjoy the taste of milk. YUCK! I never liked it. I used it for cooking and in my cereal but thats really it. Only one of my sons likes milk. The others only have it with cereal.

As for the eggs, I really FREAKED when I saw eggs just sitting on shelves here. I remember in the USA thrre was this whole thing on 60 Minutes about how eggs in supermarkets werent be kept cold enough and then I come here and they are kept just warm on the shelves. If they dont need to be kept cold then why do we have to put them in the fridge when we bring them home from the store?  ???

Some people dont even keep them in the fridge once they get them home.... they sometimes get stored in special egg baskets/boxes, at room temp.

We always keep ours in the fridge, but I remmber reading years ago that eggs should be stored a room temperature, something to do with the layer just under the shell, can't remember what it was though. Also cheese experts say cheese should never be refridgerated just kept in a fairly cool place.

There are beautiful china things for holding eggs here! I love them but don't have one. :(  A friend of mine has a gorgeous antique one shaped like a chicken. There is absolutely no need to keep eggs in the fridge. I keep some cheeses in the fridge, but not soft ones.

:P hmm well right or wrong, I just can't imagine not refrigerating my eggs! Betty Crocker says eggs are a perishable food and require proper storage and cooking to prevent the growth of potentially harmful bacteria! They say eggs should be kept at a temp. no higher than 40 degrees F which sounds good to me! I am freaky about germs as it is, so will stick with Betty on this one!  ;D
