Little Women AND Little Men. I loved Louisa May Alcott when I was a child (okay, I still do).
The Waterbabies (lots of English countryside)
Fairy tales, if she's so inclined. I loved the color fairy books (The Blue Fairy Book, the Red Fairy Book) which were old-style fairy tales.

I LOVE Lemony Snicket! He's so funny and the kids are great...they always come up with cunning plans to outsmart the villain.

I can't find the other thread of favorite childhood books... in which I thought I listed a title that I've now forgotten and am dying to remember...
It won the prize for Children's Literature in the States.... in the 70's  ::)  (shush ;))...

It's about a brother and sister who get lost and locked in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and discover a mysterious work that may or may not be by Michelangelo...

I think it's got quite a long title....  ???

Anybody?

You beat me to it! I love that book.

Another on I still love The Girl Who Owned a City. I read it when I was 11, and it has a bit of kid violence, but I am not scarred. It is a semi Lord of the Flies scenario- basically a worldwide plague kills everyone above 12, leaving the kids to fare for themselves; they quickly form gangs until there is a revolution. It sounds horrible, but it is a really good, easy read. I re-read it every few years.

Let's take our wigs off in the shopi aisle and fight it out.

One of my favourite books ever!  I need to re-read it again soon.

Think that's just a good book for girls, or would a 7 year old boy like it?

When I was young I loved the Trixie Belden books. Also, have you got her the charlie and the glass elevator sequel? I remember liking that one as well.

I have not read it for 14 years (when I myself was 8 ), but I think it was for reading class, and we *all* loved it, boys and girls. :)

Other than Little House books (I love those as a child) my first real "reading" book was Alanna : The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce. Wonderful. I loved it. Its about a a girl who doesn't want to learn to be "a good little wife" she wants to be a knight. So she switches places with her twin brother. He goes off to become a wizard and she dresses up like a boy to become a knight.  You can see where the story goes.

They were written years ago and Tamora stopped writting for awhile... then Harry Potter took off and her books were "rediscovered" thank goodness.  :)  She has a whole sets of books now about the people and land she has created. And I still buy everyone that comes out.

My 12yo loves the Tamora Pierce books...
When I am grown-up I will understand how BEAUTIFUL it feels to administrate my life effectively.

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.
