Wrong Number Plate
« on: October 02, 2003, 03:38:16 PM »
We've just noticed that the car that we've had for a year, has an error on the number plate, it doesn't quite match the registration information. The Post Office told me that the 9 times out of 10, if they don't match, it is usually the plate has been replaced and they've gotten it wrong.

Fine and dandy, all the times my hubby might have been done for speeding, they'll never track it to us. ;) Seriously, what are we supposed to do now, go back to the dealer and ask them to fix their mistake? (their logo is on the plate). How do you get replacements?

I couldn't find anything on the dvla site.  ???

I think you have to fill out a form with the dvla (my boss had a similar problem last year).  I'd recommend calling them and asking.  :D

We have a Lotus Kit Car (our toy, hehe) and the tag on the front hangs down really low...WELL ....I pulled a little tooooo close to the curb yesterday at Tesco and when I backed up, it pulled it off/broke in half.    :o

hummm just had a thought, I dont think I've even told Steve about this yet, LOL.......   ;D

Well, I'm going to suspect it's as simple as having someone who makes plates just make new (correct) ones. I don't think you need your specific dealership to make them (unless you like their logo  ;) ).

Up until ... I think it was a year ago or so (I'm getting old - my timing may be out ....)  ..... you could just walk into a motor store or key cutting outlet or garage and say "can you make me 2 "A1NEW"s or whatever your registration is.

Crooks found this a very easy way of disguising their cars, so I understand that all plate outlets now have to ask for proof of registration.  I don't know how many went to the bother of setting up for this, and how many dropped out the business, but I would have thought that dealerships at least MUST be set up to do it ... take you "log book" (a.k.a. registration document along) and that proves the registration you're not showing  ;)

*laugh*  "log book"

When we got our cars and people kept talking about our log book I was freaking out that we didn't get them (for EITHER car!) till my husband got me to calm down and pointed out that this stupid little piece of paper is a log book.

I tend to by type-B and just go with the flow, but that was totally a type-A moment.   ::)

I did find on the dvla site that you can search for registered suppliers of new plates, enter your town name and it gives a very long list. As the dealership we got our car from was on there, I'll go talk to them on Monday. :)

Thanks collington, I'm still not clear on the logbook thing though, one piece of paper, what's on that piece of paper that constitutes a "log"?  ???

Nevermind, just read Graham's post.  [smiley=blush.gif]

collington, I laugh along with you there! I have my American car here and when the service guy asked for the log book, I told him that I didn't have one since it came from the US...we only have service books, but Florida doesn't have car inspections, so the only thing I ever had logged was the oil changes, and that was just a sticker on the inside of the door that got changed each time.

The guy just kinda looked at me and my blabbering and said "well, you should get one" and shrugged, giving up.

I didn't have a clue that it was that PIECE OF PAPER that's basically a car registration. I understand 'registration form' and 'license plate' and 'hood' and 'windshield' and 'trunk'...those are the only car terms I know that aren't 'thingie' and 'wochet'.
