I've been... it was a good night out, and no more fighting than you would normally see in any city centre on a Saturday night.

So, sorry Honeybee, but it seems your sources who have told you all about this 'horrible' place, have got it wrong.   :)

(modified to add that i've been to blackpool, but not for the illuminations...)

I've been and stayed for a couple of days...honestly I didn't like it just because it wasn't my cup of tea..then again I wasn't a fan of Coney Island either.

My then b/f told me to go I'll have a blast ..so I did.

I stayed in a b&b and toured about....it's got an air of "it used to be great back in the day" in my opinion.

I went on my own walked around day and night ..wasn't bothered or harassed ..I saw the same sort of drunkard silliness I've seen while walking down Daytona Beach at night during Spring Break.

I'm not into ballroom/cruise ship style dance acts and Peter Kayish wanna be comedians. I've seen the illuminations it's pretty but not really want to pack up the fam and travel all the way up there to see it...I think although it's not my cup of tea ...anyone should go and experience it for themselves at least once ...

don't knock it till you try it... :)

I can't comment on the safety or otherwise of the place, as the last time I was there was about 18 or 19 years ago.

Many seaside towns in Britain have that air about them.  It's hard to describe until you experience it, but it's an almost melancholy mixture of "fun of the fair" and neglect.    If you see one of those "How We Were" type of TV shows with old clips from these places you get more of a feel for how they used to be.

I'd like to go check Blackpool out. Jon described it as Vegas but only tackier. I think that sounds like fun.  ;D We have a lot of client's out that way and my boss goes to see them every few months. She always brings us back a lot of rock. Anyplace that makes rock can't be all that bad.

You know before we were married DH would describe something in the worst light in order to avoid taking us there .... ;D

it's the "argh you're not missing much" so you feel don't bad about not getting a chance to visit it sooner....

Oh yeah, Jon does that too. I don't let him do it anymore. I tell him to let me make up my own mind about it.

A friend here in Leeds raves about a drag club in Blackpool called Funny Girls & how fab the show is. :)
