Oh dear.....no Food Network either  ::)

BUT......we do have a food channel (nowhere near as good) and the whole chef thing has taken off in a big way here too, just not the American chefs. You'll probably be familiar with the Naked Chef (Jamie Oliver) & The Domestic Goddess (Nigella Lawson), they're popular here as well as many other home-growns.

What do we watch - well we are a nation of home decorators apparently and there's always the soaps! We also get a lot of american programming, so I am sure you will find a lot to your taste!

Yup...once I finally got my cable I was all sorts of happy!  I used to watch HGTV and now feel like it's all covered by t.v. over here...different cast of characters but similar sort of shows!

Can you get American satelite TV. We have a neighbor here in the states that is Turkish and he get satelite TV that allows him to order Turkinsh TV. Any possibilty that this is available in the UK for US TV? We're not big TV people, but my husband will miss US football.

As far as direct broadcast satellite is concerned, I'm not aware of any American stations which are available here "as is."    Unfortunately, the positioning of the satellites to cover the North American continent also means that you're out of range for simply lining up a dish on to one of the American DBS satellites.

(Europeans and Arabs living here are more fortunate -- It's easy to just point a dish toward one of the satellites which serve the domestic markets as far away as Turkey and the Middle East.)

There are European-ized versions of some news networks (e.g. CNN and NBC News) which have local items and British commercials slotted into place.     It's even possible to see ABC's "60 Minutes" on one of the major broadcast networks here late at night.

Many U.S. shows can be found on the various stations here, although some -- both old and new -- have never seen the light of day on this side of the Atlantic.

Thanks everyone for trying to make me feel better!  We will be there in a couple of weeks, so I will check out the programs. As long as there is something comparable to HGTV, maybe I can make it work. Funny how you get used to certain things!

American sports can be seen on the NASN channel......It is a additional £14.99 a month on top of your normal sky subscription......and...you have to sign a one year contract....but it shows baseball..football...and all the major sports...also.college football...
