Too many books!
« on: September 07, 2005, 12:47:48 PM »
I keep buying books. It's a problem. The minute I set foot in a bookshop, I know I'm doomed. It's now gotten to the point where I'm buying books that I already have! So this morning, I sat down and listed all the books (in an alphabetized spreadsheet) that I own but haven't read yet. I figured that might stop me going out and buying more. Would you believe I have 98 to read?!?! Part of me feels like I should buy two more so there's an even hundred!  :-\\\\

That's why I do the library!! I can return them, or keep them longer if I need more time! Also, I miss the used book stores, where you can take in books you've finished, and get credit for them towards the next stack you buy. Do they have stores like that here?

My library doesn't have a huge selection, unfortunately. That's what you get from living out in the middle of nowhere. They can order books for you from other branches, but they charge for that service.

Most of the books I've been buying have been from second-hand shops or carboot sales (kind of like big flea markets). I do get tempted when I'm in a new bookshop, but I try and resist! At a carboot sale, most of the books seem to be 3 for £1, which isn't too bad! I'm not sure about selling books back or getting credit at second-hand bookshops, but there must be places like that here.

I'm kind of a pack-rat when it comes to books, so if they're good keep-able books, I tend to want to hold onto them. If they're junky paperbacks that don't mean that much to me, I sell them on Amazon when I'm done with them. So far I've done pretty well!

LOL! Although I prefer the image of "The Haunted Bookshop" (Christopher Morley)!

Opening a second-hand bookshop is definitely a dream of mine. Maybe someday ....

Yes, and the whole idea of getting credit on your used books at the used book shop, means you don't have to feel guilty when you go into the NEW bookshop, and spend money!! I never thought about selling them online though.

That sounds awesome!! Can I come and stay?!? :)

My bookshop would have a coffee shop with homebaked goodies in it -- but nothing like a mega-Borders or anything like that. I'd also like to sell plants and herbs in a garden behind the bookshop (not that I've given this much thought or anything ;) ).

Awesome!!  We can have a time share arrangement - a week at mine swapped for a week at yours!  ;D

Reminds me of the late John McGuffin, who "was doing his best to get through so many books that he felt should be read but 'there's still bastards writing more'." I love that quote!

That's a great one!! But sometimes I do get bummed when an author dies and I want to read more!! I was devastated when Laurie Colwin died. :(
