i'm looking at christmas flights now- around £380 or £410.  these £300 deals- when are the flights?  within the next 2 months or so?  taking the boyfriend home for the family experience.

If thats the price you're getting now then grab it, what they try and do is get people in the seats as early as possible and then what's left they jack up. once those 380-410 prices are snapped up the remaining seats will probably be anywhere from 100-200 more expensive....that seems to be the way they operate. I used to think if you waited and all the seats were'nt sold they'd be happy to unload them for a discount but found out they'd rather leave that seat empty than sell it at a discount...crazy but true :P.......it's as though they know you're desperate then and you'll pay the asking price. It's also the reason that the person sitting next to on any given flight almost never has paid the same price as you for the same exact thing.

sale price seats on airlines........the cheapest seats..they have a limit on.........depending on the size of the aircraft.....says it is a Dash8 which carries about 45-50 ppl there are only 10 at the cheapest price.......then the next 5 maybe be £50 more and so on until the plane is full........never ever wait to see if the seats get cheaper.......they won't!...hand on my heart as a travel agent.....they won't get cheaper.........it is all down to availabilty......the cheapest seats sell first..........during peak seasons..ie..christmas the fares do go up.........

and don't get fulled by the "ticket price" either cause that.. MOST.. of the time doesn't include the taxes or the added fuel supplement.......

the alternate to the above rule........at any given time a airline CAN put seats on sale......but I would never wait to the last minute......it just doesn't happen...........

This is true and most the time in order to get the sale fare you have to meet the fare rules. They can get crazy sometimes. Like you have to stay over a Saturday night, eat crab for lunch, tie your left shoe six times and travel between 7 and 7:08am. LOL

Also just wanted to mention that each airline also reserves an "x" number of seats for their frequent flyers ticket users. Sometimes this could be as low ast 4 seats a flight!

Book early everyone!

thanks for everyone's advice... i just purchased the tickets.  nice to have a holiday booked up and something to focus on when the days are getting darker and work is getting more depressed.  i do think ryanair/easyjet/etc get cheaper RIGHT before the flight (if they have seats) but these don't usuaully get released until the day before etc... just from personal experience.

Meggles if you have gotten day before cheap seats with them, count yourself really lucky......I book those airlines everyday for business and pleasure travel alike.....I have never ever seen them cheap the day before..Supply and demand......the more demand 99.9% of the time they get higher as the seats sell out.....

to get off the island with BA the next day FORGET it...you have to pay for the J class seats as that is all that is left which means they are usually about £265.00.........thats JUST to fly from the IOM to LGW return.......it is horrendous....

I looked on Tuesday for some ppl wanting to go to Rome today and come back on Tuesday the Flights ALONE from here to Rome via Manchester was £1200.00 for 2..then they had the hotel on top of it.......

This is a bit off topic...but maybe not....

When I had to come back from the USA this summer unexpectedly, I needed to book a one way flight from Atlanta....we all know that one way flights can be heckish expensive....well not so...

If you are flying FROM the USA to the UK try www.1800flyeurope.com

I got a one-way ticket from Atlanta to Manchester for $300.00

Their return fares are quite reasonable as well....of course this is only good for those of you flying FROM the USA to here.

Tell your family and friends. :)

They are a flight consolidator...........Just had a look at them.

Make sure you go through to the 3rd page

I asked for a fare from OKC to MAN and it said $445.45. it sounded good but when you click on choose this flight it adds the taxes on the next page.............so it ended up being $624.75

still not a bad price...I will pass that on to my freind that wants to come visit me next year

Yeah they don't add the taxes on until after...but you still can't beat their one-way fares!!  :)

I nearly always get a better deal about a month from when I want to fly. If I were to have booked my flight in October, about a month, or two months, or even 4 months ago, the price of my roundtrip would have been over $900.00. It is a habit of mine to check flights weekly, usually on Tuesdays, because that is when they post new flight prices.  Except for the summer, I never pay more than $600.00 to fly round trip, and I never book more than a month ahead. I fly over there about 3 to 4 during the year. So booking early doesn't always work for every airline. When hubby and I flew there for Christmas last year, I booked to arrive the week before Chrismas, to return the week after New Year's, and for two flying roundtrip, it was $530.00 for each of us. I didn't book it until November, as it was a fairly spontaineous trip.  Best thing you can do, is just check regularly, and when a flight goes down to about what you want to pay, then go for it.  Except for the summer months, which will always be much higher.

When I was in training at American we were told that for every economy fare seat sold the airline profits just 5 cents! The airlines rely on the business traveler for their profit.

Yeah.... thats akin to what the U.S.P.S would tell the public after every stamp increase since 1972 ( that of course and that the unions were responsible) until you realized that there was 1 supervisor for every 4  union employees and that management bonuses accounted for 50% of all increases in cost....I believe they told ya that, but I find it hard to believe. 8)......shareholders rule (and dictate) in private industry :P

I've been curious for a long time now and maybe some of you in or formerly in the industry can shed some light........

If the system as we know it for airline fares is such a mess, HOW could it be fixed??? If you had a magic wand and total control, what would you do to make it a better system?

I know I am ridiculously frustrated by the ongoing LA area fare structure. We have 3 major airports within driving distance, LAX Ontario Intl and John Wayne Intl (OC), If I try to book a flight from Ontario, which is 45 minutes closer to where I live, the fares are usually $100+ higher than if I book out of LAX (same for John Wayne). But the LAX people are always complaining about trying to get more traffic through Ontario and John Wayne and out of crowded LAX. So lower the friggen' fares to the same as LAX!!! Am I just being naive?? I know this situation must be happening in other major metropolitan areas as well.........GRRR!!

Sorry for the rant! Thanks for letting me get that off my chest! :)

It's gotta be un-profitable for someone, somehow... yet seems like a simple and efficient solution to me and probably would have worked just fine back in the early days of the Industrial Revolution when the main purpose of industry was to get things to work smoothly and efficiently out of necessity and need and THEN make a profit, but like everywhere else beaucracy + the rich need a place at the trough and a profit to show for it too, it's just that the government is playing catch-up....... or trying to anyway .... spelled T-A-X 8)
