Corn Dogs
« on: August 02, 2002, 11:15:05 AM »
Is it just me or does anyone else miss corndogs?  We went to the beach the other day, and all of a sudden it hit me WHAM, I NEED A CORNDOG WITH MUSTARD!!!!  My husband thought it was time to call the men in the little white coats (he is clueless to gourmet fayre/fair) and I patiently explained what corndogs are and he was still going to phone.........what's a girl to do?
::)

Hey Malissa!

I miss corn dogs as well, actually now and again.

Best way to describe them to your hubby is to make some cornbread and then tell him to imagine that wrapped around a hot dog and fried on a stick.  That seemed to work for an explanation with my hubby.

Either that or drag him back to the USA and go get one!

Now, try explaining hushpuppies to a Brit....that's not easy!

OK, I'm not a huge fan of funnel cake and corn dogs myself-I'm more of a perogi and meatball sub person when it comes to the county fair.  But I have managed to track down a corn dog recipe-mainly because I'm a great believer that if you can't find it, you can probably make it.   :)

Corn Dogs
1 c yellow cornmeal
1c all purpose flour
1/4 t salt
1/8t black pepper
1/4 c white sugar
4 t baking powder
1 egg
1 c milk
1quart vegetable oil for frying
2 (16oz) packages frankfurters
16 wooden skewers

In a medium bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, salt, pepper, sugar and baking powder, Stir in eggs and milk
Preheat oil in a deep saucepan over medium heat.  Insert wooden skewers into frankfurters.  Foll frankfurters in batter until well coated.
Fry 2 or 3 corn dogs at a time for 8-10 minutes, or until lightly browned.  Drain on paper towels.
Enjoy!

Ok, so the next logical step is where would one find cornmeal without paying 5.50 in shipping and handeling?

I used to work with a lovely Scottish woman who traveled to the states quite often and one day out of the blue she asks me if I like corn dogs!?  She said she thought they were fantastic and it was one thing that she always tracked down when she visited.

Ooooh!  Thanks for the recipe!  Yes, just as I thought, fried cornbread.  Goodness I'm craving one of these now!!!

I haven't had any trouble finding cornmeal here.  Most health food shops have it, and I've found it in smaller shops as well.  Our corner grocery even carries it, and it isn't too expensive.

Even Tescos has it here in London.  But then I live in a pretty Jewish area so maybe that's why.

I can pick it up for ya sometime if you're interested!

Make sure you're looking in the lentil/exotic food section instead of the baking section in Tesco/Sainsburys.

Wishstar-if you make these, let me know how they've turned out! :)

Hey.

You can find Corn Meal at the bigger ASDAs in the Indian section. It usally comes in a big bag. Or you can go to an Indian carried goods shop and find it there.
I've heard that you can use Polenta as a cornmeal subsitute.

Thank you for the recipe!  Will introduce my husband (poor deprived soul) to the delights of  a battered hot dog on a stick!
Thanks again...........

Yes, corndogs, crispy and still a little greasy, and steaming hot with lots of French's mustard to cool it down. Or some nice chilli-cheese fries, with NO BEANS dammit!
At the SONIC: Large Cherry Limeade please ...

They tried to sell corn dogs here in the UK a few years ago - I can remeber special corn-dog vans being parked at various supermarkets to get people to try them (and buy them). Apparently they didn't catch on though.

I can't say that they really appealed to me personally - the idea of a cornbread coated hotdog deep fried in oil made my arteries harden just at the thought! Then again, I daresay I've eaten much worse  :D

BUTTTT once you have made the corn dogs you have to find good proper american style hot dogs (ball park...they plumb when you cook them). And this is no easy task either and not those damn things in a can! [smiley=puke.gif]

Tesco makes a decent American hotdog. They're located with the luncheon meats. "American-Style Hotdogs" come 6 in a pack...and their hotdog buns come 8 in a pack. Some traditions never change.  ;D
