maiden name on passport
« on: September 13, 2005, 03:44:09 PM »
Hiya. I am currently living in the UK on a marriage visa. I got married in October 2004 and I'm not going by my maiden name anymore. I haven't legally changed my name in the states but I go by my husbands surname in the UK. My passport has my maiden name on it and my marriage visa also says my maiden name. We are travelling to Florida in May, it will be my first time back to America since I've got married. I'm not sure how to word my question but basically I am wondering if I should either get a new passport with my husbands surname or travel with my current passport and book tickets in my maiden name. I also am wondering about how I go about changing my name in America because I haven't a clue what I'm supposed to do. Any help you can give is appreciated, cheers :)

I have the same situtaion  as  you do..  married  but my passport  and stuff with the US  is in my maiden name..   we book my tickets  with my maiden name, and i bring along  my  marriage license..      I have slowly changed stuff like bank accounts and  credit cards  by filling out the proper forms  and  a copy of my marriage  license.. no problems..

I've managed to change everything except my passport and American driving license so far. I'll do the passport as soon as we're back from our next trip, but until then, yes, just bring your marriage certificate along with you and book your airline tickets in your maiden name for now (if you book online they ask that you book under the name that's in the passport....)

Also, FYI, if you decide to change your name in the US too, be aware that you have to change your social security card FIRST as the DMV records are linked to the SS records and it takes a certain amount of time (48 hrs. I think) for the electronic records to be up-to-date. I was going to do both when I was there last time but by the time I got the SS card done (and for a bit of fun, watch the person's reaction when they take a look at an English certificate - very amusing!) it was too late to book a DMV appt. and you have to do that in person.... Grr.

Just to repeat Anne's advice - book your ticket in your maiden name.  It will just be easier all around, rather than carrying your marriage certificate and hoping that they aren't being so strict nowadays - I've had problems and I have my passport amended.  Just getting them to look for something they should be trained to look for is hard enough. ::)

You can send your passport to the American Embassy in London...All they did there for mine was put an amdenment stamp on it........and I STILL have to tell check-in ppl where to look.......

always always book your ticket on what your passport says

Some airlines will charge an amendment fee to change a name in a booking.if the wrong name has been booked...and some won't...if the name is wrong, they will make you buy a new ticket...in the right name.

I had my name ammended in my passport at the US Embassy in London to reflect the married name, does that mean that I should book tickets in that name or in my maiden name thats in the passport?

Don't you have to change your name on your US Social Security card (which would get reported to the IRS) if you legally change your name in the UK because you have to report the income you earn in the UK to the IRS?

then you book your ticket in your new married name...........what ever it has been ammended to..........but you will probably have to show them in your passport where it states that your name has been ammended. I do every time I book into for a flight............

Hi I just did this process in the US. I'm not sure why Anne had to wait 48 hours to go to the DMV. In Houston our SS office and DMV are next door to each other. I got my SS card changed then walked my SS receipt next door to the DMV and changed my driver's license. Make sure you take your marriage certificate with you.

I changed my passport by mail. It's free you just need to mail your passport, marriage license and fill out a form - available on the state department's website. They will add an amendment onto the last page of your passport stating that you changed your name. Don't forget to change your credit reports also. Unless of course you don't ever expect to need a US credit report again.

Definately book your tickets in your maiden name. It's hard enough traveling with an amended passport - no one seems to know that the name changes are in the back. Just like MeShell I have to point it out everytime.

Sorry but if her passport has been amended in anyway...if she were to book her ticket in her maiden name and not on the name the passport has been amended to they can and will deny her boarding.........I sell airline tickets everyday......and the first question I have to ask is what is your name on your passport...........not the name you go by but what is on the passport.
I have been stung to many times by someone coming back and telling me I had book the wrong name on their tickets....and I hadn't..they didn't tell me the right name... :-[

I'm pretty sure she was saying that her passport *hasn't* been amended.  So booking her tickets with her maiden name is the way to go.

I can also recommend sending your passport into the US Embassy in London for an amendment.  It's quick and easy...got mine back within a week!  (Although that was four years ago now....but I think it is still very quick.)

At the moment it is taking under five days.

Book tickets in whatever name you are going by on your passport. If you haven't amended it book in the maiden name, if you have you must always book in the married/amended name.
