Birth control
« on: September 14, 2005, 01:44:08 PM »
Does anyone know if they offer NuvaRing birth control here? I already have an Rx, just don't know if they are able to fill it bc I don't know if its on the market. And if they do offer it, how much does it cost? Thanks!

There are a few good threads dedicated to contraception. I cant remember where they were. Try "Girl Talk".
I believe the subject of the Nuva Ring came up and I believe its not offered in the UK but please check the other threads!
Also, there is no charge for perscription birth control in the UK!

Here's the latest thread I found... http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=16845.0

7 months ago, I was told by my dr here that they don't offer the Nuvaring in the UK.  However, they do offer the Evra Patch.  If things have changed in the last 7 months, do let us know....

As for filling the RX in the UK... I'm assuming you have a US issued RX?  Take it to a pharmacy and see if they'll do it.  Not sure?  If they won't, you could always get it filled by a mail order US pharmacy, and have it sent to you in the UK.
If you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

I'm on the Nuva Ring as well, and am hoping the situation will change by summer... otherwise it'll be 250EUR to get an IUD before I get to the UK... So yeah, keep me posted too!

(with so many people with the same issue, I wouldn't be surprised if they got it sooner than later--I doubt they can claim it's a "fad" much longer, I've been on it for over 3 years now!!!)

Anyone know why prescriptions are called 'RX' in the US? ???

From Wikipedia:
Quote
The use of Rx in prescriptions originated as an astrological symbol that was written for talismanic reasons at the start of medical prescriptions. Later it changed into an uppercase R with its tail crossed, and was used as an abbreviation for the Latin word recipe = "take" (imperative), i.e. an instruction to the pharmacist to take the items listed in order to prepare the medicine. When printing came, it was rendered as "Rx".
and also....

Quote
Rx is a legal description in the US for drugs that are only available on prescription from a licensed medical practitioner, and are not controlled.

Yes you would have thought English doctors would at least know what a nuvaring is. I tried to explain to my doctor and insisted I was talking about IUD's! Coffeebean tell me have you usedIUD's and had much like. I have never been recommended to use one. Right now I itch on the patch!!

Basically my situation is that I have yet to find a pill that works for me, and with 7 years of trying I'm pretty sure there isn't one out there. I discussed this with a gynecologist, and she said my options were a coil (either copper or hormonal) and the ring. She recommended the ring, as the coil can be very painful to be fitted if you haven't given birth, and it's also quite costly. I tried the ring, and 3 years later it's still working for me.

I'm not very happy about the no-ring situation re: the UK, as I will be there for 3 years starting next fall. I'm a bit hesitant about the coil, as I'm quite a baby when it comes to pain, but also the fact that it's so costly is a bit of a deterrent--what if I'm one of the unlucky few it doesn't suit? There aren't many good options, though. Condoms aren't really an option, as MrCoffee and I are very adamant about not having children, and they are quite the hassle (the condoms I mean). I'd get my tubes tied, but I'm 26 and they won't do it for people under 30 here unless they have 3 kids... So it's either the coil or more unsuitable pills.

(of course there's still hope re: nuvaring... fingers crossed..)

I personally put diaphragms in the same category as condoms--they haven't sold diaphragms here since the 80s due to their higher % of accidents.

A private surgeon would be willing to perform a tubal ligation on someone under 30 w/o 3 kids.

My husband is 28 and will be the father of 2 kids, and they're reluctant to let him have a vasectomy he wants, so we're either going to go private or I'm having my tubes tied - I'll be 35 in February and a mother of 2 so they don't mind doing it for me. ;)

good point.
if you are that 'adamant' , spend the money and go private!

It's not that dear at all, either.  About £800 £900 for a lifetime of no worries.  Keyhole, outpatient procedure as well.  I'm looking at France myself.

Having said that, I've also experienced full-term pregnancy twice and at 35 in February, am very, very sure I don't want to go through pregnancy again.  Ever.
