How long should baby boys hair be?
« on: September 15, 2005, 12:25:27 PM »
Well Jack Jacks hair has recovered from 'Frank Scissorhands'' wrath. He's all nice and shaggy again. I think this is who Jack is supposed to be. I decided to let it grow. Not down to his shoulders or anything but grow longish. Does anyone else have a shaggy little boy? How do you keep the hair out of the face? I have seen celebs put barrettes in their baby boys hair.  Do they make barrettes for boys? Is it chav? Should I be even considering this?

Thing I'd be worried about is if one of hte other school-aged children bring home nits.

Dunno.  As long as you want his hair to be, I suppose.

I've already preferred short hair on boys, but that's just me.

My "baby boy's" hair is down to his shoulders but he is 17.  ;D

I'm not being helpful here so I'll go now! ;D

I think that longer than eyebrown length might get to be a bit tough to handle as a boy - both in terms of keeping it somewhat tidier, the nits thing and also appearance....what I mean by that is that it can be tough if someone mistakes you for the opposite gender (especially if you are under the age of 5-6 and don't quite understand the gender thing totally yet).

Well Alex had blonde curly hair and had that shaggy look as well and was often mistaken for a little girl, but it hard hard to cut those curls! He kept this look til he was about 2 and then we got him a trim but it's darkened some and still thick and just the other day he was STILL mistaken for a little girl!  ::)  And he's nearly three now.

I dont see how a child can be mistaken if he is dressed in blue and wearing Bob the Builder outfits, but it happens.  ;D

Ethan's hair is down to his collar now and he has lovely curls.  His fringe goes below his eyes but I brush it over to one side.   I don't want to cut it just yet, it's too cute.  Sometimes people do think he's a girl (yes even when wearing blue obviously boy clothes etc)  but I don't care and at 1 year old he is too young to understand.  My husband keeps threatening to take him to the barber's for a trim but he knows what will happen if he does that and it won't be pretty! Anyway I doubt Ethan would sit still long enough to have his hair cut yet.

That's what I did with Alex as well Britwife, just brushed the fringe over to the side. I might be biased but I LOVE little boys with curls. ;D

Well Frank really butchered his hair about 6 months ago. I was so unhappy and Jack just seemed different. Maybe I should have named him Sampson! I have also been pulling his bangs..sorry..fringe to the side but it usually wont stay long.
I dont know...I think Im getting weird because I never had a girl! Im gonna give his long hair a chance. He is cute but not pretty like a girl so I dont think we will have a problem with anyone confusing his gender.
All my other sons have very short hair and it suits them just fine.

Philip's hair, if combed forward, is just below his eyebrows, and that's the length I like it. It is usually swept to one side, and the whole thing is super curly. I love longer hair on baby boys - It is such a matter of preference though! Before we gave Philip his first hair cut (and it wasn't much!) one grandmother was saying "It is about time!" and the other was saying "Noooooooo don't cut it!" :D

Orthodox Jews don't cut little boys' hair till they are 3 years old. There is a big ceremony when they have their first haircut. The way you tell little boys from little girls is that the little girls wear dresses and the little boys wear trousers.

It took me a while to catch on when I first moved to a neighborhood in Brooklyn with a large Orthodox community, admiring the cute little "girls", with their lovely long locks, in their cute little trousers.

DS started getting curls when he was about 6 months old, but DH called it a mullet and said it I didn't take care of it he was going to shave his head.  Personally I think there is nothing wrong with baby boys haveing shaggy long hair.  As long as you can get the mashed potatoes out every night it's never to long.  I secretly trying to grow out DS hair at the moment.  He's in desperate need of a hair cut, but I'm hoping the curls come back.

i had a really hard time cutting my son's hair for the first time. i just didn't want to part with the baby curls. it's was like he wouldn't be a baby anymore and i was being forced to 'let him' grow up! but there is also something very adorable about that first haircut, the way it turns them from baby into 'little boy' immediately. i eventually lost the long hair ruffian look to reoccuring cradle cap that required me to keep it shaved short, otherwise it would get matted, and combing it out was painful. now, at 6, he is just starting to want to gel up his hair into some funky do's.  :)

Mommie's little cue ball is finally starting to look like he even HAS hair at 16 months. It makes the cutest little curls on the back of his head.

I will postpone cutting his hair as long as I possibly can.
