Have you registered with the Embassy?
« on: September 19, 2005, 05:51:50 PM »
The U.S. Department of State encourages all U.S. citizens living abroad to register with their nearest Embassy or Consulate.
From their website:  https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/home.asp

"When an emergency happens, or if natural disaster, terrorism, or civil unrest strikes during your foreign travel, the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate can be your source of assistance and information. By registering your trip, you help the embassy or consulate locate you when you might need them the most. Registration is voluntary and costs nothing, but it should be a big part of your travel planning and security.

U.S. consular officers assist Americans who encounter serious legal, medical, or financial difficulties. Although consular officers cannot act as your legal counsel or representative, they can provide the names of local attorneys and doctors, provide loans to destitute Americans, and provide information about dangerous conditions affecting your overseas travel or residence. Consular officers also perform non-emergency services, helping Americans with absentee voting, selective service registration, receiving federal benefits, and filing U.S. tax forms. Consular officers can notarize documents, issue passports, and register American children born abroad. "

I've just registered via the website.  I'm wondering if anyone else has done the same, and if anyone has ever had to turn to them, and if they've been helpful at all.

I registered when I first moved here.  Otherwise, they haven't contacted me and I haven't contacted them.   ;)

Did I mention I work for the government?  Mwahahaha.... >:D

(Ok, so it's the Park Service and not for much longer, but still....mwahahaha!!!)
When I am grown-up I will understand how BEAUTIFUL it feels to administrate my life effectively.

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.

I haven't, but I am not traveling to or from the UK. I am living here.  The NHS, the Inland Revenue and the Department of Works and Pensions know that I exist and know where I live.   In the event of an emergency, I would not be traveling back to the US, I would be by my British husband's side.

Eh?

I'm sure if they wanted to find me, they would.  Don't see the point in registering w/the Embassy.

Don't know if your son is an American citizen or British but it's a federal law that all American men when they reach the age of 18 are required to register with Selective Service (there is no draft)....besides getting a  friendly visit from the FBI, theyre ineligible for any federal school loans, grants, assistance etc.......may be useless trivia but........

I suppose it is like filing income tax everyone is suppose to do it even if they live in the uk.............but they don't think about it............

Ya he probably can register with the embassy....back in the States ya just do it at the local post office. Does'nt make a difference to Uncle Sam where he lives, if he's an American citizen and 18 he's required to register. I just know that during the mid to late 60's the FBI was in my neighborhood knocking on doors on a regular basis (the last time the U.S implemented the draft), I also know that programs like Sallie Mae, Fannie Mae, SBA and every other federal program along with Federal Civil Service make it a requirement before they'll even talk to you......if he stays here in the U.K and never returns to the States then I guess it's a moot issue.....it's a painless process but it is the law, just thought I'd let ya know.

This is interesting and a bit off topic but what about expats who have dual national sons? Do they also have to register for the draft? I have four sons. 2 are American born and two are British born.
