Montery Jack Cheese...have you seen it anywhere?
« on: September 20, 2005, 01:32:54 PM »
I can't seem to find any up here in Newcastle. What is a good cheese I can find around here that I can use in mexican dishes? Cheddar just isn't cutting it!

It just so happens we saw Montery Jack cheese in the Salisbury Tesco last Friday- it's the first time I've ever noticed it before and I actually pointed it out to my hubbie because I was so surprised.  It was at the cheese counter- you may want to enquire at your local Tesco.

I've seen in in Fenwick's....along with provolone -- that that was only once!  :\\\'( Just yesterday I ran through to see if I could spot my beloved provolone, but it just wasn't to be....at least not yesterday.  Sob.

Hello there!

You can buy Montery Jack cheese from the deli sections at Tescos and Sainsbury's; though it's made in Wales, so it does have a different taste to it. It's softer than the kind you can buy in the states.
They also have a mexican type cheese, which is a yellow cheese with a varity of peppers, so it's like a hot tasting, spicy cheese. I've used it in mexican recipes and it's not too bad, quite nice acutally.

;)

I used to see it at our Safeway before Morrison's bought it; it was at the Deli counter. So it does exist, your best bet is to check the deli counters and make a request.

Ok...haven't seen it at Morrison's or Asda up here in the northeast, but I have never tried at Tesco (it is always so crowded there!  :( )

Will give Tesco a go...thanks everyone!

I've never seen it at any Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda, Waitrose or Safeway/Morrisons. Not even M&S.  The only place I have seen it is Harvey Nicks in Knightsbridge.   A mild cheddar or red leceister are pretty good substitutes but we mostly just use mature cheddar cause that's what we like.

I don't even know what it is.  What do you use it for? :)

You ding dong Mindy. It's a hard white cheese.  In California they use it in Mexican dishes.

In Scotland (not sure about south of the border) we get a nice white mild cheddar, which, to me is close enough to proper Monterey Jack.   I tried the Welsh MJ from Tesco, and thought it was vile.  :(

Well, that explains it.  I'm not from California and the only Mexican dish I make is Tacos from a kit.   ;)

Tacos from a kit, oh my!! I've got my mom sending the enchilada sauce packs from back home, just so I can do enchiladas properly!! The sauce here just doesn't cut it.
