Can I bring food or not?
« on: September 22, 2005, 03:52:42 AM »
I do not know if this topic goes here. Feel free to move it.
Today I had a meeting with the MOVING CONSULTANT,
and she told that ANY FOOD ITEM was totally forbidden in the shipment.
I am using an International moving company.
Is that totally true? She told me that only spices.

I am so bummed because I have a lot of things in my pantry that I thought I could bring such as:
dried mexican chiles, chipotles in adobo, chinesse sauces, cocoa powder, some crackers i like, asian dressings, coffee,
latino corn flour (masa) etc.,etc.

Can I bring them in my suitcase? Do I have to declare them?

I have been reading here that a lot of people bring food from the US to the UK in the suitcases.
What kind of things am I allowed to bring?

Please helppppppp!!!!!!!!!!!! :-*

I've never had any trouble bringing anything in my suitcase/carry on. My ex got his food taken when he landed in America because it was open. (my digestive biscuts...he decided to eat one on the plane) Have mailed stuff too, and never had any problem there.

You can bring food in your suitcase that is in enclosed packagaing so tins, jars, packets are fine. You can't bring anything fresh or uncooked ie meat, fish, cheese, fruit & veg etc.  You don't have to declare it.  The no food at all must be the shipping company's own policy.  You might want to think about the practicalities of bringing some of those things though, flour could get messy if the bag splits! (you can get masa harina here now anyway).

Thanks Angie and Britwife.
I thought as you said, but this woman from the Moving company told me so many things about the FOOD into UK that I got really worried.
Also I have things that my mom brought me from Venezuela and I do not want to leave here.
I am meeeting with another moving company, let's see what they tell me about the food.

Hi Katiuska.
Maybe perhaps the moving lady was going by her company rules and made it look like you can't bring any food into the UK,
When I came here I brung a lot of American chocolates and treats like hersheys, twinkies, jolly ranchers, tootsie rolls and etc. I didn't have to declare anything. One thing I would recommend though,is if you are bring food with you , bring it with you on your carry on luggage. I made the mistake of putting it in my suitcase in my check in baggage and it ended up getting squashed, melted and totally ruined.

Thank YOU.
I will definitively use this list.
And yes may be the lady was just giving me "her" company rules.
