I love Indianapolis! I'm really familiar with the area as I grew up in Indiana - 1.5 hours NE of Indianapolis, right near Fort Wayne. My best friend works and lives in Indy and she adores it. THe town center is very cool, the shopping is great, loads of things for kids (fanTASTIC museums and the like) - loads of schools... the suburbs are nice as well. Fischers is quite popular and really nice. It is easy access to Cincinnatti, Bloomington (where IU is), gets LOADS of great concerts in Noblesville which is just a skip away...
When are you moving? I've lived in Bloomington and up NOrth, but like I said my BF lives in Indy (as do several other friends) and so if you've got specific questions I'd be more than happy to ask her or answer them myself - - send me a PM!
I'm done moving. Unrepatriated back to the UK, here for good!

finally back on after over a month gone....We are planning on moving to north Indy or Carmel or Zionsville. I have done a lot of online research and it looks awesome. Hubby is down there now trying to find out about the job...pay,vacation and so on. We are looking at early 2006, as long as we can sell our house in good time, otherwise hubby will be going down alone until we can sell it. Which is no problem as the boss has an apartment that he said David can use until we get a house, fab man!

God love you- I'm trapped here in Fort Wayne, actually.  ::)

Indy is lovely, though!

Trapped in Fort Wayne is better than trapped in Huntington! Glad I got out. ;)

Munchie - I really like Carmel, I have a lot of friends who have lived there and they've always loved it - I'm glad the move is sounding really good to you guys. :)

Yeah- I can see how it would be marginally better. . . Doesn't hold a candle to Indy- Indy is great. . .

Hope you like it- and on the off chance that you have munchkins that want to learn violin, let me know- my best friend is a grad student at Butler University, and teaches. He's great.  ;D

I guess I'm the devil's advocate:
When I was in the Army, I was stationed in Indianapolis for a few months. If you're a young-un, it's a cool because it's a huge college town. Lots of bars, restaurants, clubs, college sporting events, etc.  But besides that, there's not much to do. The downtown area completely dies after 5pm. Being a "big city kid" who hates NASCAR and other MidWest interests,  I found it to be a very boring town.

It's definitely Midwest, but it's to be expected. . . It has one of the most amazing Children's Museums in the country- it's fantastic.

I'm with ya, apstyle. I spent four months there this year and my husband spent three months there with me. I didn't care for it at all and found it pretty boring. We did lots of hiking but couldn't find much else to do besides go to the movies. I can't imagine living there but maybe it's because I'm a west coast girl and I can't stand being too far away from the ocean, I don't know. My husband absolutely hated it there though. I thought it was okayish for the four months but would never consider moving there. It seems like the people who grew up there love it though. It all depends on what you like!

I know what you mean about being landlocked. I feel trapped and claustrophibic if I'm not a reasonable drive away from the ocean.  I'm originally from Washinton DC which is 2.5 hours from the coast and that's about the furthest I would ever live from the ocean. And no, lakes don't count!  Ok, I'll count Brighton Beach even though it's not technically on an ocean, but because it reminds me of a classic East Coast seaside town. I just love the water, swimming, SCUBA diving, snorkeling, etc. Maybe I was a 'merman' in my past life.

We are moving to a small town Sheridan, 2500 people in late May, 30 miles north of Indy. We are building a house and just love the area. I have already joined a play group for the kids (on the club website all the time) and from where we are coming from it has more to do. As now we are 2+ hours away from a big city and to do anything but shop locally is an adventure. We have been done a few times and so far just love it.
