New student, old mom
« on: September 24, 2005, 03:51:18 PM »
Well I am probably the newest student to UKY. I am taking a Humanities course with OU.
The course officially starts on 1 October but I have some prep material I have been working on. Let me tell you I am STRESSED OUT! Everything seems to be written in some strange forgotten language. I have been out of school for 20 years. All I know about lately is bedtimes and diapers!
I am exhausted!

I'm not surprized that you're exhausted!

I admire that you've made the decision to go back.  Good luck!

I know what you mean.  I've been taking an online some online courses so I can go back to school full time when DS an is in school.  Trying to fit my studying in after bed time during the week and nap time on the weekends is hard.  Don't let it get you down, it gets easier once you get into a grove.

Keep it up, good luck.

Wow, good for you!  I've been worrying about going back to school after 14 years away--wondering if I'm even capable of studying or learning anything after so long--but you're gonna do it WHILE CHANGING NAPPIES!  More power to you, Pebbles!!!

Sorry, I just noticed this now! Great for you Ricki! I am sure you'll do great! Being a great student should be easy compared to being Supermom!!  ;D Best of luck to you!

Thanks everyone! I am enjoying all the hard work so far. My only regret is now I don't have as much time to play on here!
I'm starting to find my way around with my humanities course. It's very interesting really.
November starts my French course. I am hoping it will be an easy-ish 30 points because I studied for five years in high school. I'm hoping it will all just come back to me!

Welcome to the ranks of the tired students, Ricki!!! I'll be working full-time for the first time this year while trying to finish, so we'll have to share stay-awake tips!  :)

Anne I am SO exhausted! I would'nt have ever attempted all this if my sons were'nt on a strict meal/bedtime schedule. The only time I have to study is after 8 or 9pm.
My first night of hard core study was last Thurs. night. I studied for about 4 hours and went to bed about 12:30. The next day I was walking around like "Night of the Living Dead". I'm getting used to it now. I found it best to have a rota posted on the fridge so I know what I have to do during the day each day instead of letting everything pile up for the weekend like I usually do.

Go Ricki! You sound very organized and on top of things so I am sure you will adjust. Very cool to be going back and I'm very jealous of the French. That's going to be one of my goals once I get settled. Bon Chance! :)

I'm a pro plus user... :-[

I have full time placements that I've switched to night so I work from 7:00pm -8:30am then run home sort out Jess and see her go to school in the morn...then sort out house work then perhaps squeeze in a few moments of course work.

On the top of all that the time I should be sleeping I spend it on here.. :-[

Ricki you'll do great !! One tip is organizing your day out (what you're gonna do at what time and for how long) I start to look at the work quite early so I portion out through the weeks with essays so when the last week when folks are trying to cram out an essay ...I'm done and all I'm doing is sorting out the References. Don't be afraid to communicate with your tutor or course lecturer... I discuss more with my course lecturer than my tutor really and let him/her look through my work so I know that I'm still on the right track..so forth.

Anyway good luck... ;)

extra tip and not that I'm plugging but I have been using phil's read-e program because it reads out websites whilst I'm doing other stuff... ;D

But never fear, gentlemen; castration was really not the point of feminism, and we women are too busy eviscerating one another to take you on.

Thanks everyone!

I am two assignments into my first block and Im way ahead. I study in the evenings which works out well for me because Im a night owl anyway. All the kids were in bed by 9pm last night and I studied until 11:30. Jack got up at FIVE THIRTY this morning! So I got up and fed him and while he sat in his high chair watching TV I as able to get the dishwasher emptied, lunches packed, dusting done and a shower.
Coby goes to playschool at 12:30. Jack takes a nap when I get back which gives me time for laundry and vaccuming. Things are going well as long as everything stays on schedule.
I have to go back to the USA for a few days in December to take the kids to the exhusbeast. This is going to throw me off I just know it. The time change, jet lag and getting behind on things at home! So I am working now to get ahead so I wont have to work too hard in Dec.

Another trick it to get your hubby to have a boys afternoon.  He takes the boys out or even into another room to pretent mommy isn't home and you study.  I usually will hole up in the bedroom with the door closed for 2 hrs on the weekend.  After the intiial 15 min screeming session I have some peace and quiet.
