I envy you being able to do that!  I love doing the more interesting casework, but, sadly, I have to make a living somehow!  I do these forums to learn about people's practical experiences and as my way of providing 'pro bono' assistance where I can.

One theory that I have been developing over time is as follows:  "You can't ask Croydon *anything*".  Really, just anything at all.  It means that no matter what somebody asks them, there's about a 10 - 40% chance of being worse off then before you called.  Is there any area you would feel comfortable just signposting someone to their help desk if the enquiry went beyond the most rudimentary?  Other than opening/closing hours?

No. The people who answer the general enquiry line know nothing.  They know nothing about immigration law, and they have no access to files so they can't even give status reports with any meaning.  All they can do is confirm that letters have been received.  I'll refer people to the website, but not to the telephone line (unless I am really desperate!).  They have misadvised me before, with quite serious repercussions.

the fact that she has a previous visa refusal!

(By the way, it would not have been possible for two Americans to have got a fiance visa anyway!)

Actually, according to the consulate, this is not true, as my husband (then fiance) had a UK work permit. I'm not trying to start an argument, but this is what I was told from "the horses mouth."

I think Possible Sword needs to contact the consulate directly and hear what they have to say. None of us can really give her the answers she needs better than they can.  ;)

I would want any advice in writing!

The 'horse's mouth' gave you bad advice.  A fiance visa requires that the sponsor be a permanent resident in the UK.  That means a WP holder cannot sponsor.  Had you actually gone through with your application, the consulate would have seen the problem and not issued the visa...

goodness, folks, I got a scare there reading that, but Victoria's replies are heartening!

RESERVED scottish man, Barry is. I love it, it's especially fun figuring out what gets him to drop his reserve ;) but it's not good for evidence accumulation.

My emails have headers on them. and we only have the one damn picture. sigh. but we do have a very few mushy letters included as well and the excellent documentation on everything else. all we can do is try.

Well esther has sent the forms off by fedex on saturday so I suppose we should know within a couple of weeks which way the application has went. With any luck we should know within a couple of weeks for sure, one way or the other, eh? It was quite a challenge for both of us to get all the information together but thankfully that is it all done now. Thanks.

Unfortunately, I cannot say I'm totally surprised to hear that. After I really thought about it, they told me a couple of other things that turned out to be totally incorrect. . . . This is ultimately why we decided to just move our wedding up and go that route. They painted a pretty grim picture, and it sounds like they fed me a lot of BS on top of it! . . .I'm sorry I posted that now!  :-X . . . .Nevermind, don't listen to me! (Or, apparently, the LA Consulate, either!)

I would want any advice in writing!

I asked, and they refused. Again, that's why we just went the route we did. . . .It seemed to be more of a "slam dunk."

Possible Sword, I hope its going well for you! Good luck!
