paying custom tax question
« on: October 02, 2005, 01:49:42 PM »
After I have shipped all my stuff...(boxes) am I going to have to pay customs tax?

I am planning on shipping reg air mail threw the post office and I'm not sure how I should go about filling out the customs form do I explain n them I'm moving there and these are my personal belongings?  or do I listen to my freind who told me to mark the label as gifts so I dont have to pay the customs tax?  I'm just wondering if they will tax me if there my personal belongings I'm shipping there.

I also wrote on the forms "being moved due to marriage to a British citizen", to make it clear that I was moving old stuff, not getting new stuff.

My mother always marks packages "Pre-owned personal items" and we haven't had a problem yet.

Here's info on bringing personal items over: HM  Revenue and Customs

It's long!  Here's the link to the specific form.

These seem to be about bringing things over with you on the plane; I don't know if you would use the same form for shipping things.
