From New Mexico to Ireland
« on: October 12, 2003, 04:32:07 PM »
Hola!
I'm new here, too, of course.
Just moved to Dublin from New Mexico... married an English guy (with an Irish mum).

Except for a lack of electrical outlets and sunny days, things are great so far.  But I'm glad I found this site in order to chat with others who are in the same situation: sometimes feels like I'm back in third grade... I don't know anything anymore!

I have a blog which I started when I got here about experiences living in a new country (in this case a podunk NM girl in fastpaced Dublin):

Another welcome here too. I am in N. Ireland, just north of Trish. Dublin is a busy place! Hope you are finding your way there.

Good Luck :)

Just wanted to add my "bien venida" as well.  I hope you find us a nice lot and that we are able to help in anyway that we can.

Everyone's been really nice!
Hello to the N. Ireland people! I hope to visit there soon.
Dublin is quite busy and a new and exciting experience, compared to quiet, sunny New Mexico.
It's great to be in a city where I know within a 30 min. walk I can find things that I used to have to drive an hour to Albuquerque to get.  I try to avoid busy Grafton St. from noon to two because there are just too many people and I get a little freaked out.
Today is yoga day - yoga at 12:45 and then a taco from the Epicurean Food Hall.  My favorite!
So how did you all end up in this part of the world?

Hi Buendia, welcome to the site.  I have actually been to New Mexico!  This is sorta the opposite.  Usually you'll have people saying how close they are to you now.  But I had to add that in.  I visited a friend in Albuquerque.  My first time in that area.  I'm so glad I went.  It must be quite a change being in Dublin!

Kizmet - my brother actually lives in Boston... can't wait to go visit him!  But not yet as the husband can't travel to America until we get him a proper visa.

Don't worry about the transition, kcg - as Marlespo and I have both found, there is a lot that is waaaaaay better over here.  The television, the great/busy/walkable city centres, and, of course, Boots which is this ultra-hip, pretty cheap pharmacy with their own brand products in cool packaging.

I was out at shopping today and I got Boots bubble bath for my night in on Thu when the husband will be out at our local (pub) with his guy friends (drinking Guinness of course!).

Heya Buenida,  from what part of NM do you hail?  I grew up about two to two and a half hours away from Albq myself.  Know I-40 like the back of my hand, at least the part stretching from LA to Okla City...hmmm.  No such thing as WIDE open spaces where the sky meets the ground, but so glad to be living in the UK.  I don't miss too much and only wish my family lived closer...Speak to you all soon.  Just wanted to say hello. Hx

Hi SLondonChick.  Nice to be greeting you today as well.  Where in Mass are you from.  As you can see I'm in Boston.

Hi Kizmet...I lived in Newton Centre, Brighton, Somerville and Waltham in my ten and a half years in Massachusetts.  I would live in MA again if I were to live in the US again.

Hi Chick, well I think if I had my choice I'd go for Newton Centre.  Very nice.  Not too bad a commute either.  I live more south of the city.  Anyhow, its great to greet you and welcome you to my home away from home - UKYankee.

Hey!

I grew up in Thoreau (thirty miles east of Gallup on I-40)...you cannot get more podunk than that!

I loved your blog entries...I have a wonderful book about the Santa Fe railroad if you wanna have a look-see.  Believe it or not, I bought it in a really fantastic bookshop in London--near Covent Garden, I think.  I have always loved the Santa Fe trains--the art deco look--and Gallup has a decent station, too.

Take care, Hilary
