I tried making a pumpkin pie totally from scratch last year.  It came out okay, I guess, but I made sweet potato pie the first year and it was a whole lot better.  The sweet potatoes are easy to find and had a richer taste than the pumpkin.  Other than that, the flavor and texture of the finished pie is more or less the same as pumpkin--I couldn't tell the difference, at any rate.  You can find all kinds of recipes on the internet--try looking for southern cooking if you get stuck.

i made the most gorgeous, moist pumpkin muffins for my work colleagues a couple of weeks ago, and the fannies would not touch them!
They were like 'eeew, i dont think i like pumpkin'.

I would have expected this reaction 20 years ago, but... i thought the Scots had evolved a bit food-wise since then.  >:(  ::)

LOL

I've found that people are a bit wierd with pumpkin treats. I keep talking about pumpkin pie and they're really not into it. They'll change their minds soon enough.

Absolutely! I made a few pies last year, and people couldn't get enough of it!

Wow, I've just read all 3 pages of this thread!   :o   ;D

Does everybody know that most Waitrose stores carry Libby's brand canned pumpkin?  At my nearest Waitrose, it's found with the canned fruits and fruit cocktail.  Which are kept (oh so logically) on shelves above the frozen foods.   ::)

Not everyone has a Waitrose near them!
But i get mine at Lupe Pintos, or through Skyco.

Thanks for the tip for Waitrose having the canned pumpkin. I was oh so happy to find out that our local farm shop (located next to the Wyevale Nursery in Addlestone I believe) had it also! They had a whole little American section with Hershey's syrup, Bisquick, Betty Crocker Cake mixes (Betty Crocker has a UK branch so it isn't too expensive), and icings. I was so excited. They aren't things I will buy all the time as they are expensive, but I am just so happy that I can make my pumpkin pie now! I was dreading trying to do it from an acutal pumpkin! Oh, and don't forget that sometimes all spice here is called just mixed spice. I can't wait to make my pie!  ;D

this isn't a pumpkin pie but today we got small ones from Tesco and made individual pumpkin soups in the pumpkin

you cut an even top off the pumpkin
scoop out the insides and fibers
add 1/3 full gruyer cheese
1/3 full of double cream
nutmeg
salt
lots of black pepper
bake at 185 degrees for 45 to 1 1/4 hours until inside pokes done
dont over bake or the pumpkin will collapse

I got this from the River Cottage program

herad a rumour that some or all waitroses aren't carrying pumpkin?!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon
