polyhydramnios?
« on: October 06, 2005, 01:05:04 AM »
I had a scan today so they could see babys growth, I was told I have polyhydramnios (excess liquid around baby)
:(  I did a bit of research on it online and quite honestly it scares me now. :\\\'(   I don't have diabetes or anything. They don't know why I have it. They sent off blood results to the lab today to see if maybe baby might have diabetes  Does anyone know anything else about this or has had it themselves during pregnancy?

Hi there! I wasn't given that term for it, but when I had an ultra sound two days before I had my son the doctor told us I had a lot of fluid around the baby and the baby was large. Two days later, he was born and everything was just fine; he weighed 7 pounds so was pretty average if not a bit small in size. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes in early pregnancy so that could be why I had the extra fluid though my blood sugars were normal all through pregnancy. I am sure things will be just fine for you and your little girl, you are getting so close now!  ;D

I'm a pesamist, always have been, unfortantly. So I'll probably be worried until she comes out all healthy lol. Until then..I jump when the phone rings thinking its the hospital with bad news about my blood tests. :P
On the bright-side though, the scan was sooo amazing, we were able to see her face and we almost cried, her lil' nose and those chubby cheeks hehe. She even put on a show by sucking on her toes  ;D. She was being stubborn though, she wouldn't let the ultrasound-tech measure her body to check her size, she kept moving around avoiding it....poor girl has a complex already with her body hehe

Sorry that I don't have any concrete information to give you...I don't know anything about this really. I would think that if it were something that you needed to worry about though, the doctors would have said so. Just relax...you're almost there, aren't you?!

Have you been given an appointment to speak w/an OB consultant about it to discuss any concerns you might have?

Don't know much about the condition, unfortunately, but you should at least get to talk to someone about it and what it may mean for your birth plan.

Is the baby's head engaged?  Some first babies are engaged by 37 weeks (second babies may not engage till labour).

No they didn't give me an appointment with an consultant.  All she did was tell me that I have excess fluid, she said "Theres no need to be worried,it could be nothing but we just need to check to see if its diabetes or other diseases" Then sent me down to get blood taken and made me an appointment to see her in 2 weeks. She said if anything comes up with the blood results that I will get a call. Everything I know about  polyhydramnios I read online (the power of google;) ) and the doctor wasn't helpful at all, felt like she was rushing me the whole time. It just boggles my mind why they didn't pick up on any of this earlier. As much blood and urine tests I've had, and the fact that I told them several times that I don't feel movement much, I just feel her when shes kicking or rearranging herself, and the fact that I have really bad fatigue, I sleep between 12-20 hours a day now. They didn't see red flags then? ::)
The babys head is engaged though and her heartbeat is strong, its always anywhere between 130-150 .So thats good

Hang in there Carly! Sending good thoughts your way. It must be horribly frustrating not to have concrete info!

If you're really, really concerned, keep at 'em!

The baby's head being engaged is VERY good - it means the baby is in the proper position for labour and sometimes excess amniotic fluid can inhibit this.

the fact that I have really bad fatigue, I sleep between 12-20 hours a day now.

Believe it or not, this is VERY normal at this stage of pregnancy.  I could easily sleep 12 hours a day or more, and do at weekends - and I'm only 30 weeks.  Not possible during the week w/work and a 2-year-old.  Enjoy it whilst you only have one to look after!

My sister tells me it's much better to borrow a newborn than have another one  ;).  Her girls are 11 and 8 now, so she's lovin' it just now.

I'm w/your sister....my nephew will be 2 weeks old tomorrow, and I am LOVING being able to borrow him!!!  He just kind of burrows right into my shoulder....ahhhh..... :)

Gonna' miss him when we move..... :(  (I'll miss my sister and the rest of the family as well, of course, but there's something about a new baby.....)
