I guess this is as good a place to ask as any: Do you not generally find baking mixes (cakes, for instance) in the UK? I mean, I would expect that the American brands wouldn't necessarily be there, but are there no UK equivalent brands?

You'll find some Betty Crocker cake mixes here.
Most people i know who bake here, though, bake from 'scratch'.

You can find the odd mix here and there... Brownies, Carrot Cake, Devils Food.... some UK ones as well.  Just no where near the huge amount of US brands, nor UK brands for that matter, that you would find in the USA.  The selection is limited to 15 to 20 over various types of mixes not the 50 cake mixes you see in the USA.

Like Otterpop says you can learn to make things from scratch.

I also suggest that anyone wondering what is available here go browse the Sainsburys, Tesco or ASDA websites.  Do some online fake shopping.  You can search for all kinds of things. :)

I like to bake from scratch, too, but pre-packaged cake mixes definitely have a taste of their own (and it's a taste I don't mind a bit!)

(I recently learned to make a decent Victoria sponge from scratch, after a suggestion from a British friend. I had a tin of Ambrosia Devon custard around the house and wanted to know what I might eat with it *yum*)

They are handy to have around...and great in a bind.

You will also find that all those pudding in the mix ones are not here either.

in Kenya I found cake mixes from the UK. They were quite dusty on the shelves and invited you to welcome the joys of baking from scratch. The boxes were nowhere near as alluring as the shiny boxes of Betty Crocker.

I had a wander down the grocery store aisles since I've been back and I am just in awe at the kinds of things you can make from a mix these days. Chocolate chip cookie mixes for those people who think scratch is too hard and "break and bake" is too easy. Single serving juice mixes for your water bottle. Pop in the microwave Manwich mix in a plastic tub... guess the can was too challenging. Canless tuna without water. Single serve Bisquick in a plastic cup, just add liquid and shake for pancakes. I must have been in that store for thirty minutes with my mouth gaping. Everything is SOOOO easy.

ew, I don't even want to begin thinking about the perservatives and chemicals. Ignorance is bliss.

I used to LOVE Twinkies, my mom actually put one in my lunch several times a week for years!  I cant eat them now!!  The only thing I still love occasionally is Ding Dongs.  And green apple jolly ranchers.  Im gonna have to request candy care packages sent to me when I move over! :P
