About the velveeta issue lol. Whe I was visiting my man, he wanted homemade mac/cheese. Only couldnt find any subsitute. And after 4 th time using different  cheesesand almost ruining his new pot, I hit on idea of my granny , Dhe would use a basic white sauce and add cheese to melt in it. Worked out great. Good luck

you probably already know this, but instead of using Gruyere or Jalsberg cheeses as a sub for swiss, I found Leerdammer to be a closer match. I have a baked chicken recipe with bacon, mushrooms and swiss cheese and oh it was awful when I used the Gruyere!
You will also get a kick out of this....I used the soured creme in a spinach dip recipe the kind you fill a whole in the middle of a round loaf of bread and served it at my husbands Nov 5th office party. It was horrible runny and totally gross no one took a 2nd bite. I felt awful!

Try Asda's soured cream -- it's thick like American sour cream, not runny like the other stuff you can find around here.  :P

I don´t find Sainsburys sour cream all that runny.  You can also try creme fraiche or alternatively drain the runny sour cream through cheese cloth.  There is also another brand I have tried at Somerfield that is quite good, but I can´t think of the name right now.  I will get back to you by the weekend as I am out of the country right now.

Also you might have to try adjusting other ingredients like the cheese perhaps to get the correct consistency.  I make artichoke and also spinach dip here with no problems.

Thank you so much! I would love to get both recipes if you don't mind when you get back!

i just recently figured out that creme fraiche was similar to sour cream...  i was using "soured cream" before, and it was all runny and gross.
the creme fraiche is similar, but looks slightly yellowish, and seems a bit thicker.  tastes similar, and is good on tacos, though!

I realize your comment is two years old, but just wanted to say my husband and I have found Tesco's Finest Creme Fraiche to be the best sour cream substitute. It looks/tastes much more like sour cream than creme fraiche to me. It's really good. Or, maybe I've just gone too long without the real thing now. lol

to revive an old topic - I'm about to bake very special Christmas cookies that I do every year. Now, it seems to get harder every year b/c I keep moving! BUT, I am determined to get my old fashioned homemade cookies in the UK, so here goes!

Is icing sugar same as powdered sugar?
I am going to try the white flora as a substitute for shortening (crisco), wish me luck!
anyone know where I can buy a pastry mat? (where I could roll out my dough)
where i could be cookie cutters? I haven't seen them at asda
do they sell molasses here?

I think that's it. I will die if I don't get my usual gingerbread men and sugar cookie rollouts I do every year.

back to writing papers!
