Fever!
« on: October 15, 2005, 03:25:58 PM »
Niall has been running a fever since he got up this morning (103.2).  After he woke up, we bathed him in tepid water, gave him paracetamol, stripped him to just his diaper and the fever came down to 100.8.  Within an hour it was back up to the 102 range and he's now peaked at 104.3.

We've been giving him the recommended dosage of paracetamol, plus he's gone through 1.5 litres of juice with ice.  He's not showing any other symptoms such as cold, cough, diarrhoea, vomiting or meningitis spots.  He's just extremely hot, looks incredibly sleepy and less active than normal.

Is this worth calling the doctor or should we continue to fight the fever as we have been doing?

I say ring your doctor or NHS direct ...see what they say. Continue what you're doing so he doesn't go into convulsions

Cait,
Did you call the doctor?  How is Niall?

I had a cousin who had a fever like Niall once and she unexpectedly shot up to a 106F fever and had a febrile seizure.  I would get him to the doctor ASAP if you're not able to stabilize his temperature.

Hope it all goes ok!

He's seen the on-call GP.  Nothing obviously wrong.  Told to keep doing what I'm doing, plus alternate Calpol and Ibuprofen every two hours.

Fingers x'd that it goes down.

I was about to suggest that.  Our HV told us that, for some reason, alternating these two seems to control a fever better.

How is he feeling?

Tired because he missed his afternoon nap, but he's been a bit lethargic all day.

He's been dozing on the couch for the last hour and in the ear that was closest to the pillow had his temp at 105.6.  :o  Time for another tepid bath methinks,

If it causes you grave concern, I wouldn't hesitate to head to A&E, or if you have a Royal Infirmary for Ill Children, to there.

Hope he's OK Cait.  Do call the doctor again if his temperature doesn't come down fairly soon.

Well, the bath has put him back down to 102.4.  Other than the shivering, he's more interested in watching Wallace & Grommit.  Kids are tough little cookies.

Well you're doing brilliantly!! keep at it and keep the doctor/NHS number on hand..ideally if you can keep him at  home in an enviroment that's comforting it would be good but if you can't seem to bring the temp down then you may have to take him into A&E...again that decision is between you , your husband and your doctor.

Good luck!!!
